My TP fuel gauge is virtually useless with inaccurate reading. How do I correct it

there is a diode on the back of the instrument cluster(sorry no pictures)
it can be upgraded to a better one from dick smith or other such business
as long as your tank sender is working
the fault is behind the dash and is fixable
if a sedan you get to the sender from under the back of the car
tank has to be about 1/4 full the electric
fuel pump is also next to the sender unit
