Hi just as the title suggests, what oil would be ok to run in a v6 te magna 97 model. I see autobarn has golf western 20-50 on special for like $8, pretty cheap and i`ve used that oil in a commodore before and had no problems with it, so would it be ok to run in the magna? Oh the magna has 205000 kays on it.

i guess you can run any oil you like as long as its in spec but buying cheap oil isn't going to give you lasting protection i only ever use penrite oil in all my cars.

would 20-50 velocity be ok? Its only the missus car and she doesn`t want to spend much, so for now i think it would be ok.

Oil weight is only part of the story. It needs to be within oil specifications provided by mitsubishi.

Cheap as batshit oils usually are lower graded even though they are the correct weight. Opting for a quality oil means it usually exceeds the manufacturers specs.

Heaps of users here use Penrite semi-snyth oils without a hitch. I do too. Mal - the resident mechanic only uses Penrite as well. Alot of performance cars use Penrite as well. Really top quality stuff.
Although It is a bit more expensive than the rubbish $10 oil but at the end of the day its a small price to pay in comparison to a new engine and/or potential future repairs. Supercheap regularly have sales on these and you can get it for less than $40 for 5L. The 3L TE should need about 4L of oil.

As for the right viscosity because your car is past 200,000km and is fairly worn I'd recommend getting a oil that is a bit thicker when cold so the Penrite HPR15 should be perfect.

I was really was asking if the gulf western 20-50 would do the job as we just purchased the car not long ago and really just want to give it a cheap service, any new oil is better then old oil you don`t know really how long its been in there i suppose. Later on down the track when we have extra funds then yeh we will look into a better quality oil, but for now the gulf western oil will have to do. I know Penrite is a good quality oil, but it is expensive. I asked the staff at autobarn and they reckon it is ok to put this oil in a v6 with 200000 kays.

I'd go with the Gulf Western as well - I also used it in my old Commodore and had no problems. It is rated SG from memory - the Magna is supposed to use SH (for cars with cats) so whilst it's not quite the same spec I'm sure it will do especially as a temporary measure. . When Autopro have it for $8 out here, people buy bootloads of it and the sales staff have never had any complaints. But it's your choice in the end.

Nice to see you agree Hako, my old vr berlina went good with Gulf Western in it, never leaked, tapped and oil stayed clean through out its service. So this is the first time going into the Magna but i don`t think it will be a problem. Yeh its cheap alright for $8 but for under $20 you can get a service done. I was actually surprised that they still had some on the shelves, not many though.

Of course i never do a oil change with out changing the filter as well. Was surprised to find that a filter was worth $18 for a ryco type though.
