Hey guys,

Car - 2003 TJ Magna VR-X auto

My fuel economy has always been bad. But when im getting 15.5 -17L per 100km it makes me wonder if there is something wrong with the car. Is this too high? Or are magnas this bad with fuel? I do a lot of short trips. Last time i filled up i put in 43L and got 265km.

many many things can cause poor fuel usage

1) what type of fuel are you using / have you just been filling up at the one spot?
2) whats the service history of the car
3) are you driving like a prat and hooning everywhere
4) have you checked the fuel filter / lines for blockage or leaks
5) have you checked around the fuel tank for leaks
6) any smell of fuel around the rear of the car

like i said many many options, a forums search would bring up many a post regarding this

Car - 2000 TH Magna Advance Wagon - mollycoddled in service but driven spiritedly (according to Mr policeman) - only ever driven with 95RON (It used to love optimax but they changed it and the v-power is no different to the 95RON

I used to get a 10.5l/100 around town and 8l/100 on the highway with 95RON but on a trip to Melbourne from Canberra last week I got 12.5 with the rate jumping up and down and then settling around 11.5l/100. From reading the forums here would appear that I need to change my oxygen sensor (never been changed in its 150k life afaik). Got a quote for this for $300 from lubemobile - does this sound reasonable?

"Update on O2 sensors.

Previous I posted:

"I did some serious shopping around on eBay a couple of nights ago for O2 sensors, and found some in the good ol' US of A for a good price. $24 each plus $16 postage IIRC. So I ordered two. Denso, compatible with the correct Bosch 'generic' O2 sensors for 6G74 & 6G75 motors. Not plug & play, involves cutting the four wires and crimping them together again, but I've done this before with O2 sensors and it's easy. Should be rolling up soon, my plan is to replace both of the 'front' O2 sensors, will report back how I go."

and:

""Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380358368409&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:AU:1123

Same as Bosch 15733.

A little out with my memory of the cost, roughly $20 each & $20 postage."

Well they finally rolled up, took three weeks!

Replaced the front O2 sensor this evening (the only original one on my car and the one I suspect was maybe cactus) and no problems at all so far.

Bit of mucking about cutting & connecting wires, but easy enough.

So for you 3rd gen guys who need to replace ancient O2 sensors these should work no probs and a helluva lot cheaper than buying OEM replacements, especially if you can organize a bulk buy and save on postage.

I have a TJ VRX auto too...and mine has always had bad fuel economy, $40 gets me around $300kms...and that running in right low on the fuel light, it seems to use way too much compared with other cars, its much the same not matter how i drive it, thankfully im getting a work car this week and it will only be used on weekends..

I have a bog stock TJ2 VR-X Auto 5 Spd and spirited driving gets around 14-15l/100, but daily driving I get around 12.8 - 13.2 l/100km's. Cant get any lower than that unless its weekend driving or on highway. Sure I'll do 9's and 10's then but thats due to no stop start etc. I sit in traffic every day and my average speed is like 26km/hr (According to trip computer) and I spend 70% of the time in 50km zones and the remainder in 60km zones. Car is well serviced too and only done 100,000 km's

Don't think my fuel economy has been over 10l/100 since my 98 tune, then again it was never before so the tune did nothing. It's all Ralliart :)
