Hi Guys,

Still plodding/rattling along in the old blue TR 4cyl auto. Trouble is the bloody thing is sending me broke using probably 16L / 100km. Could probably squeeze 400km out of a full tank - currently sitting on 333km with the gauge showing about 1/8 tank. Not game let it get much lower - not sure how accurate the gauge is really.

Just had the P/S boots replaced, fixed up the exhaust manifold stud that was snapped off, new alternator, O2 sensor, air cleaner and fuel filter. That only leaves the exhaust with lots of holes in it, valve stem seals & rattling chains to worry about :hmm:

Cheers :)

Yup they just aren't that fuel efficient to begin with. I was getting 13/14L/100kms and mine was running without any issues with new everything.

yeah the 4 cyl auto was the least fuel efficient of the 2nd gens. manual is an improvement as is the v6. to be honest for the cost of a manual conversion (relatively straight forward) you may as well buy a different car.
suggest putting up with it and putting your pennies away for a replacement.
if it efi or carby?

EFI mate. Can smell petrol quite strongly around the tank, wonder if there's a leak somewhere...

I guess there was more in the tank than I thought - gauge was showing 1/8 with the fuel light coming on intermittently. Just filled up and she took 46.45L with 336km on the trip meter. I guess 13.82L / 100km isn't too bad after all - that's assuming there was actually ~17L left in there. Those chains are rattling pretty bad now...hehehe :eeek:

I'm slightly ignorant in this aspect, but only because I've got a similar experience. Don't these come with 64L tanks? My TS *should* have a 64L tank, but I'd never gotten anymore than 45L in, but I've slowly been running the tank into empty a little bit each week, last fill was 50L and I believe I've got a dodgy fuel sensor. I'm pretty sure if I keep running it this way eventually I'll get more fuel in and more kms per tank, and in a way "reset" the sensor back to where it should be. Granted, I have a V6 so I'll probably chew through a bit more juice anyway. But I'm on about 14L/100 as well, which is shitty but I can live with it.

generally accepted that the v6 is a little more economical than the 4.

10L/100km wasnt uncommon when i first got the rada with 100oookm on the clock. by the end with bad stem seals and 230oookm on the clock it was around the 15L/100km

my adds SE manual v6 magna was aorund 8L/100km (log books for business to prove it somewhere in his shed) but by the time she was at 150oookm it was about 12l?100, where it stayed until i stopped driving it at 250oookm

if you want economy buy a charade or 1L 3cyl swift

test the fuel rail pressure regulator at the end of the fuel rail
its vaccume operated one way valve

use injector clean

recheck the spark plugs condition

have the timing cogs and chains replaced
if you intend to keep the car

Hmm will have to look into that one...cheers magna buff :)

I have a bottle of wynns injector cleaner around somewhere from years ago..never got around to using it.

The chains worry me..no idea how far you can push it before something breaks. Better budget for that soon.

The magna is so much nicer to drive than my other car (mazda 323 with a ZM-DE 1.6L).

I got two TS's, both 2.6 efi, one auto one manual, combined fuel ecomony is about:

Auto gets 10l/100km (140,000km on it)
Manual gets 9l/100km (83,000km on it)

If on highway only, generally I get about 1.5l/100km less than the combined economy.

My auto TS EFI 4cyl gets $9/100km on short trips

Threads like this remind me why I love LPG :D

chains and cogs last this long not much more than 200,000

when noisy its usually the cogs and guides that wear out
more than the chains stretch

the size of the tank doesn't matter. You just need to fill the tank. Record the mms on the odometer. Then when you next fill the tank you will be able to see how many kms x litres got you. If you have a smartphone there are plenty of apps on all platforms apple/android/windows etc that help with this

have an iphone and android any apps for both platforms that you would recomend?, will do as you said but for future reference would you or anyone else know the size of my ts wagon fuel tank?

the second gen wagon had a slightly larger tank than the sedan. 72L from memory. but the guage will tell you that you are empty quite a way before that.
to be honest im not sure regarding apps on iphone/android as im a windows phone user myself. someone else my be able to help on that front

My TS has a similar fuel guage, after about 350-400kms my orange light comes on and says empty. But I only get about 40 litres in it. On a long trip it is much more accurate and wont show empty until about 550km. I have run mine right down until it ran out (had a jerry can in the boot) and I got 610kms around town before it ran dry and then put 63 litres in it.

Just to back up what everybody has said so far... I'm pretty sure all 2nd gens have about another 15L in it even after they hit empty because they're designed this way. I've driven another 80 kms on empty before and didn't run out. Although I've read that if you do run it dry, you'll cause your fuel pump to suck in air which will eventually stuff your engine. Besides my 2.6L TR auto is on about 14L/100km, V6 3.0L KR Ei and KR Xi autos are around 11-12L/100km and my V6 3.0L manual is 9.8L/100kms (all combined and all on petrol).

Bugger - back to 15.8L / 100km. Haven't been thrashing it - only thing different is the car was parked for a couple of weeks with about 1/2 a tank. I wonder if it has been leaking out somewhere slowly while parked. Odd thing is I haven't noticed any drips...
