An 12V test lamp and a bit of wire is all you need. Test producer is in the service manual you can download it from the link in my signature Vvdown therevV

Hi Shaun
If you want the real deal for such a cable Evoscan is the place..and their software works & low cost as well. I use it on my TR, no problems.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I recently purchased Evoscan cable and software and can't get it to do anything on my wife's 95 Verada.
Is there some special procedure to make it work ??
Some details......
I purchased the 1.3R cable.
I load up the software, it sees the cable, plug the cable into the connector near the fuse box, turn the ignition key to the ON position.
I've tried every combo of settings in the software but I get ZIP !
I'm obviously missing something, as this thing is just an expensive and useless cable right now.
Any help would be appreciated.

I recently worked on a similar project for my 91 TR as well and I got it working for me.

I am using a Palm PDA and MMCD Datalogger with a very, very simple cable.
At first, I tried with a more sophisticated adapter with a converter chip, but aparently the Magna ECU (contrary to, say, GM ECUs) puts out serial compatible signals and the converter is expecting UART signals. I assume the chip just screwed up the signal so the software could not work with it. This is what might be happening with your cable as well.
If you are using a laptop you might give an RS232-USB adapter in combination with the below DIY cable a go.

Otherwise, you might try to get a hand on an old Palm (compatible models are listed on http://mmcdlogger.sourceforge.net/) with a serial cradle or, if you are reasonably comfortable soldering, add a serial cable to a USB cradle (http://www.gpskabel.de/info/cradlemode.htm).
