View Full Version : Which motors actually fit!?
Hey guys and gals,
I know this subject has been asked to death but i've been searching around trying to figure out what motors you can actualy swappy'mc'change into a second gen, but i've ended up more confused with people saying different things about the same motors :P
Anywho, I would like to look into a 6g72 24v DOHC + Manual Conversion for when either my 4 pot or the auto tranny dies, but i'm unsure if its even possible on a second gen.
And please don't tell me to "just buy a new car..." thats not what i want haha
I <3 MY MAGNA
ANY help would be much appreciated :)
4cyl and 6cyl engine mounts are in different places, but if you want to move the engine mount, should be good. Get the looms with it. And the turbos if its from a TT gto.
Cheers for the reply TiMi, I saw that you had to move that one engine mount and thats no problem, but did the second gen v6 have SOHC and 12 Valves and the third gen 24 and DOHC? or were they both SOHC?
I'm trying to figure out where the N/A DOHC 24v 6G72 Actually fits in (as in what car it comes from)
EDIT: Just saw that the GTO/3000GT Came out with one :D
No Turbo's for me :(
I'm just about to get my P's and Forced Induction, as much as i'd love it isn't allowed.
2nd gen 12v sohc 6g72 trans on drivers side
3rd gen 24v sohc 6g72 trans on passenger side
the n/a gtos had dohc 6g72s, some other japanese cars did too

I'm still in progress with my conversion from 4cyl 2.6lt astron 4G54 (Automatic) to 6cyl 3lt 6G72 Twin turbo (5spd manual).
I grabbed a 1/2 cut GTO 1991 which had mostly everything required to do the conversion (engine, ECU drive train, front harness loom, engine loom, dash loom etc....) except that there is quite a bit of aftermarket GTO/3000GT bits added to it which is required (FMIC, piping for FMIC, upgraded fuel pump)
All mounts except the passenger side mount line up. Special custom mounting required to fit or otherwise cut, reweld mounting position could be done. Ive had a custom mount made as i did not fancy cutting and rewelding.
Drive shafts from the GTO 1/2 cut cant be used as they are different lengths to the 6G72 drive shafts found in 2nf gen Magna's.
There is quite a bit involved in doing this conversion.
(Especially if your converting the GTO Getrag manual gearbox from AWD to FWD as the viscous coupling unit thats part of the centre diff assembly needs to be welded)
Ive been at the build for the last 6 months taking my sweet time making sure its done without margin for error (plus my bank account got upset with me from all the stuff ive got since i began the build

Thanks for the reply Dougal :)
I saw your thread while i was searching, can i just say your TR is *****NG AMAZING mate!
A TT in a second gen would be awesome in any respect, but you've really gone all out and i'm sure you'll never part with the car haha
As i mentioned, i can't have a Turbo/s in any respect :( But your build and the other N/A 6g72's are really helpful to people like me, to gather experience and learn from your mistakes lol
A quick question though, why is it nobody has tried using the GTO drive line (as in AWD) or even a diamante one? is it just imposible or too much of a headf*ck to be bothered with?
And does the manual trans bolt up, or is there custom mounting/ bracket moving needed?
Im not to fussed with cutting and welding as i can weld myself, and i've got mates who are welders by trade, so not too much of a problem there :P
Main thing i can establish is getting a decent cut, and agian MATES will come into play,i have mates in big ol japan that would be willing to scout around and check engines, ect for me if i ask them nicely haha

Hey Puma,
I think that most dont go for AWD conversion as they were/are like me and purchased a 1/2 cut GTO/3000GT/Stealth so being only the front half naturally did not get the rest.
Remember that these were not locally produced cars (GTO,3000GT, Stealth) so its imports only which limits things a little (unless you have big pockets and wads of cash!)
If there be an entire GTO car that was purchased then conversion from FWD to AWD would have certainly been on the cards.
However this is not a simple process and i have no idea what snags there be with even trying to do this for a 2g Magna.
1st gen Diamantes, well thats another story! But again not a locally sold car so if your really really really lucky you might find one.
If your not going with converting the Getrag manual AWD transmission then you can use the gearbox from a 2nd gen 6G72. The bellhousing bolts etc line up the same as the Getrag.
I chose the Getrag as ive heard its a bloody tough gearbox even though ive had to pull it off the block and break it apart to modifiy the centre diff to make it FWD not AWD. It helped that numerous folk in the USA have done this and posted detailled instruction on how to do it.
I have the name of the company i used to get the 1/2 cut.
I will pm you there name and you can check em out see if they have what you need.
Cheers
My tranny started to slip yesterday, between 2-3 as they do, ahh not long now :(
