I have recently purchased a 2001 wagon TJ series and I filled the petrol tank to full and slowly the gauge moved towards full but but stayed at 3/4 then started to drop again! Then it will be be randomly half or empty, but the trip computer is not right either saying I have only between 18 litres / 45litres of fuel and then saying I only have 80ks left on a full tank! LOL are the two units working off the same sender? or is there something weird that I need to do. Your help is much appreciated as my wife is driving this car and I dont want her to run out with my 2 year old son in the car.
Replace the sender mate. It lives on the fuel pump assembly under the lower portion of the back seat. Remove the 4 screws on the access plate and follow the manual to get the assembly out.

Odd, a mate of mine has a KJ Verada in which the fuel guage on the cluster doesn't work (Stays on Empty), so he just uses the trip meter to know how many Ks he has left to go on the tank.
The mechanic has told him he needs a new fuel sender, but if the fuel sender affects andif's in this way, then each car should have a different diagnosis?
Ideas?

The distance to empty function in the trip computer requires a usable sender to evaluate changes in fuel level between starts (ie a refill) or during a run, along with knowing the size of the tank. However the fuel consumption function (ie litres used) is calculated from monitoring the signal controlling an injector and is completely independent of whatever the sender is reporting.

Have ordered a new sender and its arrived today $95. Problem is the location of the sender unit on my tank is not below the service panel, will have to drop the tank and install the new sender unit. Will have to wait till next week now as I just filled the tank. Got a nice petrol station near me doing fuel for $1.26 :) Hopefully this will fix the trip computer too.

After visiting the spare parts department and realising i may need a new gasket too I left the new sender unit behind until all parts was in. I got home and after instructions of where to locate it from the spare parts guy I found my cabling points going into the fuel sender have corroded! Because of their size anyone know how to clean them enough to make good contact?
can u post a pic of the corroded area so we can see just how bad they are corroded?
