View Full Version : Power through Sub

Okay, here's the options: 300WRMS through an Alpine Type-R 12" or 200WRMS through the same sub but then later upgrade to provide 600WRMS through the same sub.
What I'm wondering is if 300WRMS is enough to rock a Magna or not, otherwise I guess I'll shell out the cash and get the second amp to get up to 600WRMS of power through it... What have people used and is it loud enough? I don't really want to pump 300WRMS through it, find that it's not loud enough and then be stuck because I can't add anymore power without having to sell something... (Btw, if you're a CAA member, you'll probably recognise this post..)

Bloody hell thats enough wattage to blow your brains out yet alone rock your magna!
my setup was built for clarity. So my Kicker IX404 amps only have like 60wrms when they are bridged and my subs can take 300wrms. But two 12" subs with only like 60 wrms each is enough to rock my magna and shake the back seat to bits!
Let us all know how u go anyway

60WRMS? Didn't think it would get that loud... I've been hopping in and out of people's cars lately, haven't had the chance to test out a Magna.. Maybe it's totally different...
hmm.. Has anyone else put about 300WRMS through though..?
Blowing my brains out.... That's interesting.. Seems like I'd really better get that remote.. =D

I have about 350WRMS going thru each of my two 15" subs at the moment so 700WRMS total and it shakes, you can't use ya mirrors cos the picture is just distroted. 300wrms should be fine to put through

I would save up and get the 600w amp. If your gonna use an Alpine Type R you need to have the power :)
The specs for Type R is 300w RMS and 1000w Peek.

Id have to agree on that, Spend the extra money
And bloody hell will it crank!

remember - underpowering your speakers and subs will dostort them - you need the power to run them proper - even if you never crank em.

Ive got to agree with Manual....
However..... If the sub is rated at 300WRMS, then try to give it 300WRMS. Giving the same sub (rated at only 300WRMS) 600WRMS seems like absolute overkill and will probably fry it in the end.
If the sub is given a rating of 300WRMS and 1000W Peak, it means it can handle a continuous supply of 300W and only very short bursts of power up to 1000W, so providing it with a continous supply of 600W doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
I personally have got two Pioneer 12" subs (TS-W304C) running off a pioneer 4 channel amp giving each sub 120WRMS. This is a bit under powered and in an ideal world I would provide each sub with their required 300WRMS, however this is where money comes into it and you can only get what you can afford. But My Magna certainly shakes like hell when its cranked.
If you've got the money to spend (and if you're talking about 600WRMS amps then it sounds like you do), why not invest in a second Type-R sub and another 300WRMS amp. Two 12" subs running at their rated power output will DEFINITELY have the magna shaking.

I have 2 12" pioneer vccs subs and they are only powered by 160wrms but can take up 300wrms normally and i would hardly say they are underpowered. The don't distort at all even at high levels and shake the car to pieces. I LURVE Kicker amps!

I know people who have put 600WRMS into those Type-Rs with no problems... When you think about it, it's only really 600WRMS on tap, no continuously with a further 400WRMS of headroom (although at 600WRMS with distortion, you could probably kiss your sub goodbye.. I don't plan on doing something as dumb as that)
I could go for another Type-R without the extra amp since the amp I was going to get was a 4x100WRMS amp, just bridge two channels and run them over the Type-Rs but after finding out that Type-Rs can really take much more than their rated power, I feel as though I'm not really getting the most of the power out of them... (Or I guess I could by another amp and Type-R and pump 600WRMS through each!! Ahaha, 1200WRMS of power just for my subs.. I wish.. But for the extra amp and sub, it'd cost about $850)
I think I'll keep dreaming.... Still a long way off from implementing it, but at least it's time to plan things out and do it right the first time.

Hi!
I run a Alpine 12" TypeR and put the full 300W RMS in to it. It's pretty loud - and being in a sealed box, it seems to go REALLY low.
The sub is being fed off a Phoenix Gold 600.4 amp. Front stage is 75W RMS in to Boston Pro Series splits. These splits can play quite loud & clear, so they also tend to drown out the effect of the sub.
BUT i still want it to be louder!!! :D I've been thinking about getting a 2nd TypeR, 2nd amp (~600W monoblock), rear 6x9's, a cap, dry cell, etc - but the extra costs (ie, not waste money on the car) and mainly insurance/theft risk reasons is holding me back.

Oh yeah i forgot to mention - many people have thought I've had 2 subs too, or a big 15 or something - always quite suprised that it's only a single 12 :)

plans have sorta ground to a halt since the TJII.... Dunno what it is, but it feels so wrong to modify a new car...

True - mechnically wise IMO - but replacing the CD player with a big system is truely WELL worth it :)

lol... Well seeing as I didn't exactly pay for the car, I just drive it, I don't think my dad'd be too happy when I start ripping up carpet and cutting holes through the firewall... Might have to wait a bit or do somewhat of a stealth install (Just how the heck do you hide a 12" sub?)
