hey ppl, i own a TF magna, and for the past few months when i start it up, the lifters make a ticking sound for 5-10 min or until its warmed up. i dunno if this has been brought up before, but can anyone tell me if it'll cause any damage if i just leave it.... called up a few places, and they said each lifter would cost around $45 and there are 24.... so im thinking of just putting up with it, have done some reseach and most of the things i have read say it generally doesnt cause damage. Also, a service is due soon, dont know if i will do it myself or take it to mitsu.... just the oil and oil filter change etc... is there a specific grade of oil you guys recommend to maybe quieten down the tapping noise? Does anyone know the oil that mitsu use?

cheers, Alex.

Check your oil level and that you're using the right oil. Using an oil that's too thin, non existant or the wrong type will make them noisy.

Yeah also mate just make sure that it's not your injectors makin the noise.
Some people have made that mistake $$$

But what i just did last night ( spent some good quality time the car) i had similar noise, which i was pi**ed about. But get out the good ol ring spanner 12mm 0r 15mm can't remember, anyways check out all of your header nuts to make sure that they are secure.
Don't laugh i had 75% of mine not as tight as they could be. Four of which you could take off by hand. Now this had completly fixed up the noise i had which was a ticking sound when you put the throttle on under load. And i thought i had a crack in the headers so check them and this might solve your problem with only dirty hands not an empty wallet.
Let us know how you go.
Cheers Adam :flame:

My TJ went for it's 45000 service at a dealership on the weekend. According to the invoice, they used a castol 15w/40 oil. What grade oil you got in it at the moment? generally a thicker oil *should* eliminate some of the noise - but as you say its only when you first start... a thicker oil may take longer to get to the top on a cold morning??

In my experience, you'll always hear a bit of valve noise when you first start the engine.. but it is definetly a distinct noise, and I couldn't imagine anyone mistaking valve noise for the electronic "tick" of the injectors (or if they did - any mechanic that didn't tell them it wasn't the valves deserves to loose his job)
