Hey guys,

first time poster, and love what i been reading so far...

i am looking at buying a 2002 vrx magna and im also looking to buy some wheels for it in the same day... i came across an interesting wheel offset calculator to help:

http://www.jonathanrowny.com/page/offset-calculator

i would like to know if anyone knows what the distance is from the wheel hubs to the fender, both front and rear. i dont want my wheels sticking outside of my guards so this is a really fantastic visual aid to ensure it doesnt happen.

any info would be very much appreciated..

Cheers

77mm which is the default is probably right for the front. You generally have more room at the rear. Either way, OEM offset is +46 so between +38 and +46 should work, as I've been told.

awesome thanks for that...

so that means by going from a 17x7 +46 (225/50 R17) to a 18x8.5 +38 (235/40 R18) the rim would protrude by about 5mm past the guard..

take into account natural negative camber when lowering, then it should effectively just tuck back into the guards (with possible need for a slight rolling of the guard).. with approx 11-16mm less clearance on the strut side..

can anyone confirm if this is right?

The widest legal wheel is 8". 235/40R18 is actually 11.6mm smaller in overall diameter so you shouldn't have rubbing issues with +46.
With 8" wheel, it should be flush with the guards. See here (http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp?item=Wheel-Tire size comparer&sw1=225&ar1=50&bd1=17&rw1=7.0&et1=46&sw2=235&ar2=40&bd2=18&rw2=8.0&et2=38&text1=&text2=).

thanks vlad..

yeah i know legal limit is 8" but im looking for a set of wheels i use for show and take to the track also... thats why im looking for wider wheels...

will keep standard wheels for daily duties...

so by putting a 8" wheel with the OEM offset of +46, this will take 13mm off the inside clearance. if this is fine, then having an 8.5" wheel at +38 offset, would definately clear (as it only reduces inner clearance by 11mm)...

so i suppose the last thing to confirm is that if there is a 8" wheel at +46, is there another 14mm clearance to the guard...?? if there is, then i will be one happy chappy.. if not, would be good to see if rolling will give this extra clearance...

OR

can anyone with 8" wide wheels and an offset of +38 (which seems to be a popular choice), confirm if there is 6mm clearance available from the wheel to the guard/fender with this setup..

i know calculator and figures on paper say one thing, but its nothing compared to real life applications & examples..

i know im really long winded but just want to get all my facts straight before i shell out $X,000's for a set of wheels & tyres that wont fit...

Mine with 18x8 +35 sits flush with the guard.

awesome...

3mm is negligible IMO... do you by any chance have a close up picture of this?

im thinking that if its only 3mm past where yours sit, a minor guard roll will get them to fit...

really appreciate your help with this mate...

Here is a top down pic (http://i856.photobucket.com/albums/ab124/vbednikov/mycar/SNC00085.jpg).

Note that the wheel is flush. You just see a little of the tyres rim guard.

ah ok... thats exactly what i needed...

so wheels 18x8.5 +38, wearing 235/40R18 tyres, with the VRX flares, and a slight guard roll, maybe a smidge of neg camber, should fit...

again thanks for all ur help... got exactly what i need...

8.5" rims with 235/40/18 with +38 offset will fit without the need for a VRX flare. I'm about to put this combination on my car - no VRX kit & have already tested for clearance. I actually think 245/40/18, on the same rim is do-able & may test fit that first - if it fits, I'll be going with that instead.

Also, there's a member on here, running the same size rims & tyres as you're planning to but with +32 offset & VRX kit & his setup fits inside the flares. (not sure if he's had to trim the inside of the flares, though).

i have a vr-x at standard vrx height with 9.5"wide rims, but tyres are 245/30/20. offset is unknown (hidden under tyre) but with the flares i get slight scrubbing when cornering too fast.. its fine with 5x people (lightest 95kg) if not THROWN into corners. without the flares it would not scrub at all!! hope this can help a little!

wow... 9.5" rim...

and the only scrubbing you get is on hard cornering? what about inside clearance when your at full lock?

do you have any pics that show the outside clearance of the wheel straight and at full lock?

its a real shame you dont know the offset koz i dare say there would be a lot of people who would love to know how they can get 9" shoes on without cutting or rubbing... (me included.. :))
