Hi guys,
Well the time has come to service my auto (has been 4 years, the car had 78k since it was done and its now got 140k) and I wanted to know if I could perform it myself. The only reason why I haven't yet is because I thought there may be band adjustment inside of it. So do the third gen four speed autos have band adjustments inside of them?
Thanks

I've done this once before, it's just a fluid change - no adjustments required or available. The only filter to change is if your tranny has the external spin on filter.

It takes a lot of transmission fluid, especially if you flush it. Somebody else might have the exact figure. Use genuine transfer fluid. There's a castrol oil that may do, but the price may not be any better.

The workshop manual will help out. But search the forum as I think there's a DIY for this.

Thanks man :) . I might do the flush too. Also I don't think it has an external filter so there is no filter under the black pan at the front of it which means I won't have to buy a gasket set? Thanks

Recommendations are in the QLD section in the QMD garage.

That all seems to be mostly info for SE qld. I live in Townsville man. All I really need to know are there any internal filters to change?

I have mine serviced by Kennedy Automatics in Mackay. No problems so far, works out to be less expensive that doing the job myself. I'm on my second auto so I'm kinda paranoid about stuffing the job up. If the wreckers markings on my transmission are to believed I now have a TE 4spd in my TJ (has a spin on filter), though I'm not sure that's correct.

Anyway, there's no user serviceable filter on the transmissions without an external filter. There is a filter, but its deeper inside the transmission - not in the pan. Somebody else will confirm this for me.

The biggest reason why I want to do it myself is because it's the only set of wheels I have for the time being (maybe I could get it done when I get the TJ registered, but then again I'm only selling the TJ) which means I would have no way around for a day and I figure if can swap an engine successfully I could service an auto trans. It would also give me some more knowledge etc as working on the TJ already has. So that filter that is deeper in the transmission, if you take it somewhere to get serviced, will they change that too usually? Thanks

Also, I would take it in on my holidays however my holidays start on 23rd dec and I'm going on a 750km road trip with my mates to rockhampton (from Townsville where I live) on the 28th dec and staying there till the 4th jan so thought I might need the service done before that. Though i was gonna book it in for after I got back. But if I can do it myself before the trip that would be even better. What do you guys think? Going on a 750km constant drive there and back with 4 year and 62000km old auto oil is ok as long as its changed when I get back or am I better off doing it myself before the trip?

Price your oils; genuine or Castrol TQM-ST ten liters should cut it (but please check your manual first). Find the DIY in the forum and the tools required - GO FOR IT. Dispose of the oil properly. Test drive, recheck, and top up if needed.

It's a simple job. Can be messy, get a good drain pan, some oil line to drain the torque convertor and a good funnel that can reach the filler. Supercheap does a good cheap funnel kit. Take your time, check everything is done up properly afterward.

Replacing these transmissions can be expensive. And halfway through your road trip it'd be a right pain in the A.

Thanks mate. Hopefully I will do it all successfully. I've got a good working knowledge of mechanical parts on a car so I should be ok. I will post on here and let everyone know how I go. Thanks again Skapper for all your information and help :)
