Okay, my first car is a Magna. Won't give you the life story.

It's a TH Magna with, you guessed it, a fully hectick tape cassette player :eek2:

What I'm planning to do is, once I pay for it, and put fuel in it and a few bits and pieces, rip that old piece of technology out and put in a newer, more modern head unit.

Essentially, I'd like to
- Plug an iPod touch into it, but via a rear input on the unit and wire it in so it comes out either in the center console or in the change pocket area immediately forward from the center console. Why? Looks neater and since I'll most likely be listening to my own tunes versus the radio, I'd like it to be as neat and out of the way as possible.
- Have the backlight of the unit to reflect the same colour of the climate controls/instrument cluster/dash backlights. Do the knobs for fanspeed/etc have any illumination anyway?

Not keen to spend too much on it because in the rare event that someone elbows the window and nicks my shit, I don't want my first instinct to be "oh shit, my $1000 head unit's gone!"

Last, I might consider putting bigger and better speakers in. Like the head unit, I don't want to have the biggest, beefy-est speakers, just ones that do the job but a) won't cost me a butload and b) don't ruin the overall look of the car. Must like how you wouldn't buy a top range speaker system for a casual computer, just a set of alright speakers to do the job, without sounding bad.

Again, not trying to be picky but don't want to ruin the overall look of the car by chucking expensive/fancy/etc equipment in there, just stuff to do the job... better.

So reccomend me some options as to what I should get.

Cheers guys :)

Look for something with a USB and 3.5mm and get yourself both sockets..

Head unit wise to match up with the dash colours etc..

Find something in JVC range and most have adjustable backlights..

I'd highly recommend an Alpine or Pioneer head unit (not a fan of JVC). It's just a matter of finding one with those features for a good price.

I would highly advise that you ask around some of your mates if anyone knows anyone who works at JB Hifi, or Supercheap Auto or something similar, so you can (try to) get cost price. I picked up a Pioneer DEH6250BT from Supercheap for $150 from a mate. It has all those features (except color change), plus it supports phone bluetooth. I imagine you could get a good one for about $200.

Plus, you'll find people probably wouldn't steal it, after all, it's a Magna, it doesn't scream "expensive sound system"... Unless you're in REALLY bad areas of the Western Suburbs, lol (Sunshine, St Albans, etc.)... By the way, where abouts in VIC are you?

Any speakers you get will fit in place of the stock speakers without having to change the covers, so it won't look any different
