I was just wondering is it best to use Mitsubishi ATF or do other suitable brands work just as well? I changed my fluid 6 months ago as it was brown and I used Nulon multi vehicle ATF, The trans shifts sort of ok, holds on too long in first and down shifts can be a little rough, the car has done 218,000 k's and its a KH Verada. Just wondering will using Mits ATF make any difference? cheers

People say Mitsu ATF is the go..

I used Nulon when I did mine and i dont doubt that the Mitsu stuff would be a better idea..

I found shifts to be slightly harsher and not so consistent..

Might be the age of my gbox (8yrs - 115k) but ill be going back to Mitsu next change.

You should definitely use Mitsubishi ATF. Its formulated especially for your transmission! It stopped my ol' KS Verada wagon from flaring and shifting rough from 1st-2nd. If your KH is like mine, then it'll have a twist on Automatic Transmission filter (you'll be able to see it near your air-cleaner), you should replace this. It'll cost you $35 from Mitsubishi if you give them your VIN.

Has been asked many times before and as always the genuine is recommended.

There are other compatible options but for the same price I'd stick to the genuine stuff.

Thanks for the reply, my car sure is flaring, going back say from 4th to third when you put your foot down it feels like it drops in to netural for a split second then jerks then goes in to gear, its getting old so I though age maybe playing a part too. My KH is a 2000 model and I bought a new filter but when I went to fit it, there was no spot for the filter, only something that looked like where a filter would go, and after doing some research I found that Mitsubishi delted the external filter from late TH/KH Magna/Veradas.

Excellent, thanks for the advice GONE, Mine has done 218k, so might be wear too I guess. I will use Mits ATF next change too, just might need a lot to flush all the old stuff out. cheers

Just to clear up a few misconseptions here

For starters, Mits do not make a fluid, it is actually last I heard made by BP

In general ANY good quality specific SPIII fluid is fine, not these mutlti trans rubbish but specific SPIII

The reason I use genuine is 2 fold, the price I get a 60l for is actually competitive with other good brands and this way several of my customers still have warranty on their cars, mits can not turn down a transmission warranty claim as the genuine fluid has been used at the correct interval

Mine is a 2000 KH, and it has the external filter. Yours is most likely different, though.

As MadMagna says, the problem is that not many people used to make Mitsubishi fluids (now quite a few do) -- in addition, lots of people blindly don't use the correct stuff anyway.

Most common mistake to put Dextron III in.. not good!

So in short .. get a quality SPIII and you'll be fine. Just if you do go to the dealer, mind they don't gouge you unncessarily.
