Hi All,

i have been trying to order a gearknob for a ralliart magna i just bought and i have been getting some very different information from my local Mitsubishi parts department.

the parts guy said that there is a "soft feel" gear knob (kind of like a fake leather) which came on all the magna's from exec to vrx, then there was a "true leather" gear knob on the Ralliart.. now the issue is that there is a 100% price difference between the two... my concern is that there is no difference between the gear knobs, and im just being taken for a ride with the price, just because i have a ralliart VIN number..

does anyone know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, if this is correct or not. im about 5 mins away from taking them to Fair Trading koz i really think that its the exact same part with a slightly different number, just to hike the price up..

The Ralliart manual gearknob is leather (real or fake I don't know) with stitching, and it extends half way down the shaft. It is not round and it is not hard plastic.

Taking them to fair trading, that must have been a tongue in cheek joke.....

There were in fact 3 differnt gear knobs

There was the std plastic one, this one is something in the order of $80 from memory, then there is the covered gear knob, looks like leather but is not, that was about $120 from memory and then there is the proper leather, this was used on the Sports, VRX from TJ to TW as well as the Ralliart, they were about the $170 mark, I have one of these near new on my desk from my car when I changed it back to Auto for the Mrs.

The lether one is actually a plastic one with a cover stitched onto it, I have taken the worn covers off these before and even the gear positions markings are there

While on this subject, does anyone know if there was any difference in the Auto shifter knobs - between 3rd gen Magna models (TE, TJ, etc. or Exec, VRX, RAL, Verada, etc.)?
Just out of interest, mines fine, I was just wondering, that's all.

do you just in the size / fitting / shape puck or do you mean in the coverings?

as mentioned by mal their are 3 types of differant style but im near 98% sure they all have the same fitting / shape

All i can say is the true leather ralliart knob is one of the best gearknobs out, very heavy and feels great.

Thanks for your replies.

Madmagna, there lies the problem.. the guy told me that the VRX knob was $79.. and when i asked for the ralliart he said it was $152...

but if you're saying that the gear knob is the same leather knob for both the VRX AND the Ralliart, then im being told 2 difffernt prices for the same knob...

No as he is most likely looming at the superseeded part number which superceeds back to the plastic gear knob as the tj vrx part number is nla

As is the ralliart one which however has superceeded to the tl le vrx manual or tw vrx

You need to understand how most but not all parts people work....they don't

Same as the rear cam for the ralliart wbich has superseeded to a number 6is cam as there are no more number 7is in stock

Pretty sure there's the leather & the non-leather auto shifters.

The leather ones, that I've seen all have a bolt holding them in place, under the shift button, whilst all the non leather ones have a screw in the front, holding it place on the shift rod. Can't say for sure of the actual buttons are any different between the 2.

Of course, the GTVi's got the optional Nardi shifters. They do have a different style of button - looks the same, but it's not; I tried interchanging them, but couldn't.

Just buy the 150 dollar leather knob, or put another knob on.

Or you could go to the spare parts place and look at both side by side, it's not exactly hard to tell the difference between vinyl or whatever vs real leather.

Either way it's less than the normal 170 for the leather one that Mal quoted.

He's also right about spare parts department, one told me that the manual and auto have different roll stop mounts, I had to call Mal to get that cleared up.

Also nice name lol

I didn't quote 170 exactly ffs I estimated. And you think that they will order them in to "compare" yeah right dream on as dealers can't return stock to mits

Eh I assumed they had them in stock didn't read it properly.

What you could also do is ring two dealerships and see if they come up with same result.

If you're after a nice leather gear knob, check out the CJ Lancer one. It's a little shorter but nice and heavy and looks and feels really good on a Magna. I test fitted one on mine.

The leather knobs are great and I'd recommend them. I took my old Magna one and put it on my Legnum because it came with some crappy plastic wooden thing that felt horrible because it had no weight in it.

so in the end i went with this...

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gifts-SET-Royal-RALLIART-MITSUBISHI-Rally-R-K-/160686656039?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2569abca27#ht_3488wt_944

i know its know original, and i dont know what the quality is like, but for the price im willing to give it a go...

otherwise, i might actually try and hunt down a CJ knob koz that looks nice enough, and i would assume it would be a touch cheaper...

lol how the hell did you go from a genuine leather knob to a fake eBay Ralliart knob?

anything is better than the plastic momo crap thats on there atm... its got sharp edges (for a gear knob) and feels so crap in the hand... got this just for the time being and also for the cool lighter and valve caps :D

will will definately be looking into getting an OEM knob, whether from a magna or CJ soon... just want to actually have a feel of them befor i decide which one to go for..

cousin has a ralliart with a standard knob, so will test that out, then go to my local mitsubishi dealer and fondle their knobs on the weekend... LOL
