I have searched for an answer but none were specific to my question.

There is a strong fuel smell from the left hand rear side of the car after driving. I have looked under the car and have not noticed any dripping fuel from there.

Could the filler cap be suspect? Perhaps it not air tight... or is there another fuel component in that area

no, flyboy. its all the time, not just after topping up.

Could be your fuel cap venting valve has malfunctioned, given the age of the car, I would get a new one or one from a newer model from the wreckers and see how that goes.
