View Full Version : Dome lighting cable, where does it go?

Okay, so I'm installing some SMD LED strip lights in the footwell, and I need power for them. I originally thought somehow wiring it to the interior dome light (now also a LED SMD festoon light) would work? Is there a way to do this? Where exactly does the wiring for the dome interior light go, so I can hack into it. Behind the dash somewhere would be good.

The Magna's actually have the plugs in the dash loom for the footwell lights. Stick your head under the plastic panels or take them off and look for a loose two pin plug that are close to the factory globe holder holes in the bottom of the plastic panels.
I have to say that I was amazing to find that MMAL would spend the time & money to fit the wiring for the light but would not bother to finish the job by putting in the plug, globes & plate.  this was the same for the glove box light as well - it is actually taped onto the loom about two inches from the mounting hole.
With regard to using LED's - just be aware that they require far less power to run and unlike globes they don't just dim when they get less power - they flicker. You may end up with the LED flickering even when the normal globes would turn off. If this happens then you need to wire in a resistor in the line.

Wroooong....
Only the TJII has it on both sides, the TJ I has it on one side only. Anything earlier does not have it unless is a Verada which this one is not
TH does not have the wires there at all

Nevermind :)
ok, ive done this to my ignition light, and footwell lights, you will find the wire running down the drivers side pillar, just pull the plastic off and you will see them, thats where i tapped in to do mine

Wherw exactly did you tap into it though, fuse box etc?

You tap into the wire itself
Should be two wires, a red one and a red with a white stripe
I cant remember which one you will need to tap into tho :S
The roof loom connects to the top right of the junction box in the drivers kick panel. One plug with 2 red wires (one striped). When the door is opened, the red/white stripe wire is grounded.

At the the top of the junction box (fuse box)x the will be a little black plug with 2 wires, a red wire and a red with white stripe wire. You can tap into them. :)

So simply connecting a LED strip with positive to the red and neg to the striped one will work fine?
Correct, this will create a "door triggered" light, but the on/switch/off functions will not work, it will be always on. The on/switch/off functions are in the roof light itself, not the loom.
You can emulate this using a SPST 3-setting switch on the ground wire (Setting 1 no wiring, Setting 2 door trigger ground, Setting 3 solid ground).

No worries. Should I pull the dome light fuse in the engine area so I don't screw anything? I'm down to the last fuse cos I blew one putting in the dome light...
Is there an easy way to access the cables? It seems to be tucked behind the black box which I assume is either my flight crash recorder or the ecu
It'll only need to be door triggered for the time being. Manual on off is another day.
Just unplug the loom before tapping into it and you'll be fine. Black box = BEM, it slides off its mount.

Ok got it unplugged and am currently thinking on ways to go about this with minimal cable damage. Can I simply connect to a separate 12v source such as the ciggy lighter and ground to the striped wire, or will this bugger something ?
That'll only work with Accessories on, not much point doing door lights when the ignition needs to be switched :)

Ah, true that. Didn't occur to me haha. Perhaps the 12v battery source behind the head unit? Is that doable?
The solid red wire is a constant 12v, use it!

Yeah I will now that I've moved that bloody BEM out of the way. Time to start slashing some wires.
