hi guys,
my 1993 4 cylinder tr has an intermittent issue. Sometimes when I come to a stop, or while the car idles the check light comes on, and it also came on tonight when I backed off the throttle at 100 km/h, when the revs dropped to 2000 rpm. As soon as i put it under load again, the light went off. Just need to know what type of things to look for.

Intermittent faults are hard to trace.

Look at the diagnostic codes. Do a thread search here to find out how to read them. I remember (vaguely) you short out some pins on the connector under the dash, then use an analogue multimeter to read long and short pulses on another pair of pins. It's in the second gen manual, anyway.

I did see a YouTube clip that show a TR hunting at idle and turn the check light on and off randomly. It sounds like your problem. They suggested was a throttle position sensor, but the bloke who posted a video said it was fix with a replacement ECU. I'm just throwing it out there.

sounds like an alternator problem to me

If it was an alternator problem it would throw up the alternator (battery) light. The Check Engine light could be triggered by a number of sensors, the more common ones being the oxygen sensor & throttle position sensor. Does the engine run smooth whilst the light is on? Call up your nearest Mitsubishi Dealer & ask if they can do a quick free fault code scan then you'll know exactly what is triggering it.
