View Full Version : Lightning Magna
Hay all
Im looking at lightning my TH sports magna abit. Wat are parts or anything that u could remove without looking stupid or affecting car. Im looking into a lightweight flywheel. Also into a lightweight crank pully but not shore if they sell any for magnas?
Cheers Kurt

It was tempting to throw in a dictionary joke. But i'll leave it.
On-topic though. LED's, since i assume you mean lighting, are a great choice. Ebay has a huge amount for cheap. I got 5 metres for $30.

dave you are a troll my friend, no constructive comment. Kurt weight reduction could be achieved with sound deadening removed, etc or going extreme, with carbon fibre bonnet . lightweight wheels would be a good start, i stick with my 16inch alloys for just that reason.
take out seats/carpet/sound deadening/stereo/spare wheel/door cards, put it all back in after your 1/4 mile?

Strip interior, take out sound deadening and lose some weight around the belly?
Take all doors but drivers off and put aluminium sheeting over, weld to chassis and paint over.
I wouldnt take doors or anything of. But mabey lightweight wheels would u only do fronts or backs? Would a lightweight cranksharft pulley do anything?

light weight wheels including spare, and maybe 380 front calipers as they are alloy and lighter then the magna brakes but the bigger 380 rotor may make the weight similar.
also the tj bootlid is lighter then the Th
ralliart enkei 17" wheels weigh more then tj sport 16" wheels so not recomended . some of the evo factory wheels are the best choice

evo 8 or 9 factory wheels no earlier. get rid of spare.
If you are serious about LIGHTENING your car:
Get rid of seats in the back, get rid of door cards and replace with carbon fibre panels, scrape off sound deadening glue on the floor (trust me it weighs a lot) remove spare from boot and also any trim and carpet. In the game of weight saving, every bit counts. Its easy to drop maybe 200kg in a smallish car so a magna should be easy to drop that. But you will need:
Custom plastic/carbon fibre body panels like bonnet and bootlid and perhaps front and rear quarters
Perspex side and back windows
Remove the rear firewall and replace with cross bracing in the form of a proper motorsport rollcage. Stitch weld the chassis too to increase rigidity.
Theres no end to the weight saving you could do.
Oh yeah and has been said lightweight 16s or 17s (compomotive or OZ) and a set of lightweight billet calipers.
Perhaps a lighweight exhaust system made from alloy as opposed to steel
If you are a complete loon, scrape off the underbody tar and spray with a strong sealant instead. Have seen this done and thr stuff weighs like 30kg from a small car. You must regularly wash the underside though or rust will set in.

+1 for complete exhaust system upgrade. The rear and center mufflers are relatively heavy compared to sports items. Extractors "should" be lighter than the standard items as well.
Ditch the options? The executive models were the lighter ones.
Ditch body kits and spoilers if that suits your taste in style.
Stereo and sound system could go to. At best (if possible) smaller/lighter speakers and wiring.
Ditch the spare + jack & tools for when you're just driving around town.
Beyond shaking the weight there's weight distribution.
I don't see the sense in going overboard with weight reduction on a daily driver. The resulting increase of road and possible reduction in driving comfort wouldn't be worth it. Just keep it simple enough to bolt back together when it suits. Weight reduction can be the cheapest performance upgrade for any car (done properly) as essentially you don't need any money to do it.
I shaved off about 16.8kg using light weight wheels & nuts. Not cheap though!
Reducing unsprung weight has extra benefits.
1) Lightweight pulleys - as you say, might be hard to find off the shelf, so measuring may be required. Does anyone know if EVO or V6 2.5 TT engines have compatible pulleys? They might be easier to find.
Eg:CLICK for website: http://www.cdfracing.co.uk/images/d957_2.jpg (http://www.cdfracing.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=308&osCsid=sb9ocmnjbdc2j7s46gnljj0tt2)
2) Also undersiz that crank pulley - it's smaller, so lighter. Plus it reduces the rotational speed on the other engine accessories meaning more power for the wheels. I'm no expert but guess if doing this it might be an idea to also undersize the waterpump so to keep it rotating at normal speed.
3) Find out if an electric water pump is lighter than mechanical. Also reduces mechanical drain on engine.
4) Perspex instead of glass. Oh wait, you said without affecting the car. Not being able to wind the windows down might be an issue.
5) convert from power windows to manual wind down ones !!
6) if you don't use the back seats, remove them. More room for shopping and you don't have to be designated driver when going out!
7) drive naked !!! :)
