View Full Version : Cheap Tyres!

My TH had 215/60/16 fitted as standard.

It currently has bald 235/40/18 on it.

Will 245/45/18 fit?

I've checked the on-line tyre calculator and it seems to "theoretically" fit and is within the Qld road rules. However, I'm getting mixed answers from tyre shops. Before you reply with "just try them on", I will probably buy the tyers on-line and get them fitted.

Thanks.

235/40/R18 is the best size for cost, speedo accuracy, and handling (based on a 8-8.5" wide rim).

I can't comment first-hand but I would be cautious - 245/45/18s are 33mm larger in diameter than the 235/40/18s you have on there now. I would be very apprehensive about whether it'd fit without scrubbing on the guards or suspension. Plus the extra 16mm of rubber on the sidewall will make the rims look smaller.

They're a less common size, but 235/45/18s are a near-perfect match for factory. They'd be my pick.

It's worth noting that 235/40/18s are 19mm smaller than the standard 215/60/16s, which is legal in Queensland, but I believe would be illegal in most other states.

235/40/18 is actually 19.2mm smaller diameter (not legal in NSW) than 215/60/16, so your speedo is reading over at the moment. Do you get overtaken by traffic much? :)
245/45/18 is 13.3mm over, so within legal range at least.

A quick look on ebay finds 29 tyre listings in size 245/45/18 And most of them seem to have the right weight loading !!
EG prices for 1 tyre: Nexen @ $170 , Kuhmo KU 19 @ $200, Federal 595 Silica (95W) @ $200, Gemstone (if you never drive silly or for burnout tyres) (96W) @ $105.
(most of those were in Vic + NSW so add shipping. One listing said $70 for 4 tyres to Qld.)

p.s. my tyres are 245/40/18 on 7.5" wide rims. and I have NO scrubbing issues - there isn't a fingers width between the springs and tyre at the front though.

a 245/45/18 should be the same width, just a fraction taller, so hopefully wouldn't have a problem with clearance for me. Offset & width of your rims might affect things for you though.

Have sent you a PM, but just for everyone else, 245/45/18's (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57888&highlight=) have been made to fit before.

Cost, perhaps but I'm not too sure re the speedo accuracy. I've run the stock rims, 17" rims (235/45/17), 18" rims (235/40/18 & 235/45/18) on all of my Magna's & the only combination to read exactly 100 on a GPS & the speedo at the same time was/ is the 235/45/18. Handling may be marginally better, but comfort levels will be increased by a taller profile too. :)

Oggy: What offset are you running on those rims? Brand of tyre?

245 45 18 are factory on the VE commo and are a pretty big tyre, they are a bit more expensive too (we sell cheap 235 40 18 for $130 and 245 45 18 for $190 so there's a bit of a difference when you get a set). If it fits and that's what you wanna do then go for it.
