Hi,
Just wondering where I can find instructions on how to replace the ignition coil in a KF Verada (3.5l). Is it easy to do?? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards, Peter

Just get a replacement distributor, is easier and often cheaper

Ignition coil is buried deep in the distributor. They are available on eBay for about $88 pp. Don't know how hard it is to swap over though. As above, a trip to the wreckers might be cheaper/easier. Or maybe find a sparky who is prepared to do the swap over? You can get recon alternators and starters for the Magna, so a recon distributor should be available (if you want a new coil and don't want to try yourself). Hopefully.

The manual isn't very helpful in showing the internals of the distributor. Somebody jump in here if they have a picture of the internals. lol

Thanks for the advice. Probably a dumb question, but i can't see how to remove the distributor. I know there are only 2 nuts to remove, but they are almost impossible to access. Do you have to use special tools? Any tips on how to get the nuts off?

its easier if you remove the air intake, you will see the top bolt easy enough, the bottom bolt you will have to feel with your fingers, just use a socket, extension bar, and ratchet. thats the easy part, the dizzys accumulate a carbon type build up where it slots in, you will have to lightly pry/twist/ turn and possibly swear at it before it will let go (with me it just took a few cans of beer :P). when you got it out, clean all the carbon build up off the replacement dizzy, and get a new seal. make sure you mark where your spark plug leads are

and if you really need to go down the path of swapping the internal coil , you run a high chance of stripping the little screws that hold it in. I think they are posidrive , not regular phillips.

I pulled apart a distributor and here are the steps:

1. remove cap - 3 screws: http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z447/peteroptions/distributorcap.jpg
2. remove rotor arm and 3 screws circled in red: http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z447/peteroptions/distributorinternalplate.jpg
3. remove cam angle sensor plate: http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z447/peteroptions/distributorcamsensorassembly.jpg - you just undo the screw in the middle of the triangular nut
4. remove the 2 screws shown: http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z447/peteroptions/distributorpowertrans.jpg
5. remove the 3 screws hiolding the coil shown: http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z447/peteroptions/distributorcoil.jpg
6. this will leave the distributor body:http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z447/peteroptions/distributorshell.jpg
Reassembly is the reverse process. However, make sure the No. 1 cylinder is at TDC, line up the cam angle sensor plate flat section in the centre hole: http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z447/peteroptions/distributorcamsensorplate.jpg and when the rotor arm goes in it should be pointing to the cable for cylinder 1 on that distributor cap.

Good pics - If mine gives any trouble your pics will be very valuable.

Finally, actually someone who has done it! Very straight forward. Good opportunity to run a multimeter over the power transistor too, to see if it still reads within spec. Worth doing. (My TS 2.6 blew two coils in quick succession until I replaced the power transistor as well.)

I don't know why so much FUD has been spread about this in the past.
