quick question,
when removing the front shafts on the TJ AWD can you just unbolt the tie rod end, ball joint and lower strut bolts and pull the shaft out of the transfur case? or do you HAVE to remove the shaft from the hub assembely first?
this is only on a doner car and just need to remove the transfur case to pull the motor and trans out..
thanks Mossy..
Undo the castle nut, the strut bolts, and drop the hub down. There will be enough play to remove them without undoing tie rods or ball joints.

hey did you mean the castle nut on the shaft? the 32mm one? i was hoping to leave that one in tact and pull on the hub assem with enough play to pop the inner shafts out and leave them dangling?
Yes the 32mm nuts, You'll need to remove them and its a lot easier then removing a hub :)

dont pull on the shafts, the cv will just pop out and be supported by the boot only. i really should invest in a drive shaft puller

i was just going to leaver the shafts out as shown in the genuine downloaded manual but was wondering if you can leave the other end still in the hub?? and just undo the strut bolts and drop the hub down??

If you were going to disconnect the lower control arm from the hub as well, I'd say it'd be do-able, but for the sake of removing that nut, why would you bother?
What's the issue with removing the nut? You've already removed & used the brakes elsewhere & have no way of stopping the hub from spinning?

Hehe, it's called a massive lever bar, works wonders :D
I popped the drivers side one =\
Does the intermediat shaft and d/s one come out in 2 pieces or as one? Are there only 2 bolts on that little bearing/support thing on the firewall side near the front of the engine?
