Hey all,

New here but it looks like a good place i can spend hours at ;)

Only just starting to get in to magna's and this has been troubling me for some time now.

Simple question in what order do you rank the third gen magnas in

example.

VR-X < Been the one with most feauters
Sports
Advanced
Executive

This is how i belive they are ranked but not to sure hence the question :)

In order of lowest to highest trim:

Executive (ES in TL/TW)
Advance (LS in TL/TW)
Solara
Sports (VR in TL/TW)
VR-X
Verada Ei
Verada GTVi (Some may argue this is the highest trim level but I disagree, no factory sunroof)
Verada Xi

IMO you cant really compare veradas and magnas, it's more like a branch, starts with the shell, then branches off, xi is to the verada what the vrx is to the magna. Sports vs luxury.

For magnas, I'm not 100% with the Solaras and advances but:

Ralliart
Vrx
Sport
Solara
Advance
Exec

The Ralliart doesn't have mist lights?

I also excluded limited production models (ie. Ralliart, LE, VRX LE). You sure can include Verada's, they are the same body, same driveline, same carpets, same dash, same door trims, same plastics, need I go on? There is nothing on a Verada that cannot be fitted to a magna, and vice versa.

Also note that the "level" depends on the individual model, eg. a TL/TW ES is generally better kitted out than a TH Executive, probably even more than a Solara? For example, pretty-much all of the later models were fitted with the likes of power windows, climate control, dual airbags, and cruise control; even the lowly ES.

I wouldn't exclude the Verada range from the rankings but do see Woob's point of sports vs luxury.

For me, it would all start off with the base models then split into two branches - Luxury & Sport (with the GTVi appearing in both branches/streams)...

BASE...
- Executive/ES
- Advance/Altera/LS
- Solara

then the LUXURY branch...
- Verada Ei
- Verada GTVi
- Verada Xi

and the SPORT branch...
- Sports/VR
- Sports AWD
- Sports Wagon
- VR-X
- VR-X LE
- Verada GTVi
- Ralliart

But if I had to combine them, my line up would be...
- Executive/ES
- Advance/LS
- Solara
- Sports/VR
- Verada Ei
- Sports AWD
- VR-X
- VR-X LE
- Verada GTVi
- Verada Xi
- Ralliart

...and in the earlier range (we shouldn't forget them)...
1st Gen - TM-TN-TP
GLX
Executive
SE
Elante
Elite

2nd Gen - TR/KR-TS/KS
Executive
SE
Verada
Verada Xi

2nd Gen - TR/KR-TS/KS
Executive
SE
Verada
Verada Xi
I agree with this but you've missed a few

2nd Gen:
Executive
SE
V6 Executive (not so sure where to put this)
Elite
Verada Ei
Verada Xi
Verada Ei GT

How about this, factory RRP for each model, not on road, just base cost with no options, so as it comes.

My thought is the car that costs the most must and is top. Anyone got this information?

Verada Xi

Yes, Xi was a higher trim point as it has a higher price and a factory sunroof, some better interior trims etc.

Ta-dah! :D

I've used the 2002 TJ range as the basis of this RRP comparison, as this seems to be the year/model that had most of the range in models we are trying to compare.

Any Series 2 Magna that was FWD or any TJ1-1.5 FWD Verada was a 4 speed Tiptronic.

Verada Xi represent!

I thought for the longest time that the GTV's were better. My mind is now at ease and I can sleep peacefully knowing I have the crème de la crème. lol

Good job. That's why you're an administrator. I didn't realise there was so many different variations of TJs and KJs. I guess I didn't look into it.

A very interesting thread!

Reading on from this, do you think its possible also to rank the car series as well? (TE, TH, TJ, TL etc and KF, KH, KJ etc)
Perhaps under a couple of lists like;

Performance - Stock vs Stock, which model would win on race day?
Aesthetics - Which model has the best design?
Reliability - Which model to people think was the best built in terms of needing repairs/maintenance?

Also I'm talking Stock for Stock.

Just curious to hear what people say.
Thanks :D

This is a useful thread for those unfamiliar with the ranges across the different series. While it reflects the different levels of equipment assigned to the Magna / Verada ranges, and the different ways these vehicles were marketed and the associated pricing, I don't think an "Executive" Magna is necessarily an inferior car to a Verada!

Performance - Stock vs Stock, which model would win on race day?
TJ would be the quickest, as they had the most powerful engines. The sports models had the same engine in TJ and TL/TW (163kw). The TJ Series 2 base models shared the same engine as the TL/TW (155kw).

However, I understand that the TL/TW was a little heavier (20-30kg?) because of extra safety features, which would give the TJ a slight advantage.

Aesthetics - Which model has the best design?
Now that's a can of worms lol Love it or hate it though, the TL/TW is a more modern looking design.

Reliability - Which model to people think was the best built in terms of needing repairs/maintenance?
There were no significant mechanical changes during the 3rd gen lifespan so it's much of a muchness. I have heard that the later models (particularly the TL/TW) weren't quite as well built because of cost cutting, but I don't think this translates into more repairs or maintenance.

Morsolo

Aesthetics is all personal opinion.

I think the KH rear looks best, but the KJ front is awesome. If I had to choose one single model, I'd probably say the KJ. I am not a fan of TL/TWs.

I remember reading somewhere that the TH series is one of the "best built", because it was newer than the earlier third gens, but before Mitsu started to cost-cut everywhere. But as Valdez said, it doesn't really translate into a less reliable car. All Magnas are reliable! :)

Performance - TJ (in stock form, was there anything speced higher than the Ralliart)

Aesthetics - TJ (especially the Ralliart)

Reliability - No idea really, but I've always wondered if the factory workers would be more careful and precise when they knew the car they were working on was special or a limited edition.
ie. If you were working on the MMAL factory floor on an Executive Magna it'd be just another normal day, but if the car under your skilled hands was a nice wasp yellow VRX or a bright red sporty Ralliart, - would your attention to detail and precision be better?
Given that I think it would, I kinda like to believe a TJ Ralliart may (at least possibly may) be better built in the factory than most other Magna's.
However saying that, it'd be just my luck some guy on the factory floor was jealous of those lucky enough to buy a brand new Ralliart and left a few screws/bolts slightly loose just to annoy the owner 3months down the track with a couple of rattles and cause me a repair 9-10 years later. lol

hmmm, I voted TJ Ralliart for all three lol - not biased much! :ninja: lol

I'd also like to know what kind of 'Extra Special' things went on with the cars.

Like that Factory Ralliart GTVi Verada that went out. Any similar cars or stories?

TZABOY has ralliart #000. Pre-production model for the 2001 motor shows then converted to production model by MMAL. Is subtley different to all other ralliarts such as the rear hub assembly. Has a weird VIN plate too.

Remembering though..

Ralliarts were individually numbered.

GTVs were a limited run of 400 until they released the GTVi as a standard brochure listed model.

Don't forget the Harlequin Magna's that were also released after being used in shows.
About a year ago the Wagon version with full purple & mustard colour paintjob, special grill, g.e. body kit and rims went on sale on ebay. Although it didnt sell very well.
I've also twice spotted the harlequin vr-x sedan as well - that came in a yellowish/light green colour and is now being driven around by a P plater. I've got pics on one of my phones. Unfortunately, being your typical p plate driver - the car had some pretty nasty scrapes everywhere and was pretty beaten up. :(

From memory the body kit at the back especially was different too? I remember TZABOY finding out his hubs were different the hard way! Its nice to see that someone has made something even more unique and made it one of the fastest magna's around. A true patronage to the first ralliart magna!

The VRX you refer to has been here a few times, is his dads car and his dad purchased this car new from mits after it had been around the shows, has a bit if a nudge on the front left corner but I think they are waiting for Mits to do some paint as Mits have the codes and also the base coat process, I know the paint is costing him an arm and a leg

There have been so many factroy and dealership varients over the years, when I get some of the wrecks in I look at them and have to scratch my head as often an option which should be there is not or vise versa, especially with the last of the 380 range

I dont think the bodykit was any different. The hubs were off an evo i believe as the showcar ran different brakes and wheels. It now has twin piston brembos on the rear
