G'day everyone!
I recently picked up a TS wagon With the 4cyl and CArby :tired:
Problem is she wont fire. The bloke i brought it off said that it wiould only start with his foot to the floor but eventually it wouldnt go at all!
Had a good play around, Ive tried hooking the fuel pump upto separate 12v supply because i thought there were issues there but fuel pump is functional but im still not sure if it is pumping when its suppossed to. Ive tried tipping fuel down the carby and whilst turning over and foot to the floor it sounds like its gonna go untill there is no fuel left in the carb.
Ive tried the timing which is not the issue, relays were done, ive taken the carby apart multiple times because the fuel was stale, ive tried a second carby to no avail.
Any suggestion would be GREATLY appreciated as me and my mech by trade father cannot seem to work it out.
Cheers, Steve

cam timing out because the chain is so stretched it has jumped a couple of teeth. Possibly.

dont think it is a fuel problem if you used two carbies
do you have good spark to the plugs
could be the module in the dissy
the coil /plugs them selves
if no better try a compression test
carby needs all the vacuume woking
check the two dashpots are holding vacumme

I tried the timing chain and all looks fine. Note the engione has only done 138000 kms.
I have had a feeling that the problem lies in the spark like you say so ill have a look. How do i tell if it is the module in the dissy?
ill get back to you on the spark.
compresion seems fine (stuck a finger down plug hole)
Where/ what are these dash pots?
Cheers for your help mate :)

Remove a spark plug number one preferably (passenger side of engine). Lay plug on engine and crank her over. You will soon see if she has any spark. Should be a healthy bluish colour. If weak and yellow or missing completely you have a starting point at least.

havent got a good picture
on the carby itself they control choke and lower butterflys
they are the round things with a vacumme line on them

try running 12v directly to the starter. Mine had voltage drop, which meant the occasional non starting episode.

From personal firsthand experience my bet would be ECU.Your stated symptoms were all occuring in my TR.Came on this GREAT forum & did a shipload of investigative research, pulled my ECU out undid the 4 screws enabling lid to come off & was looking at this...........http://s1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff364/bbbobbb6969/car%20shit/.
Exchanged over with 1 i had salvaged from g/f's old TR years ago & instant success.

If it is sounding like it wants to go when you tip fuel down the carby it sounds like a fuel problem.
Disconnect the fuel inlet pipe to the carby and stick in a bottle and crank the motor over to see if fuel spurts out the pipe into the bottle.
Can you hear the fuel pump whirring in the tank with the cap off and someone cranking the motor over??
If it is whirring and no fuel spurting then a blocked filter or very low fuel level in tank i have had magnas with low fuel parked on a hill and not start due to fuel on the low side of the tank not getting to the pickup for the pump. Even a slight incline can do it.
If it is spurting could be a stuck float chamber needle on the seat! Or float has a hole in it. Trial and error and you will get there.
On a carby model not too much to go wrong if you have spark. Cheers Vee

I have had the carby inlet off and it did spurt out plenty of fuel, i even connected the fuel pump to another battery and had it constantly running to see if there were any issues regarding that but it was no help. There is no incline and there it about 10 litres still in the tank. I have tried 2 different carbies and they didnt work, and i took one apart and seamed to be all good.. Thanks for your input though!
Hopefully might be able to have it fixed tommorow with the help of a top bloke from this forum :)

to anybody playing at home fuel pump relay

Ok sounds like fuel is getting as far as the carby but what about actually into it?? When you pump the throttle does fuel squirt into the throat from the accelerator pump/power valve jet?? Enriches the mixture on acceleration to compensate for the sudden increase in air into the carby.
If is does squirt then fuel is gettng into the float chamber and thus carby should be ok. If not then the float needle is stuck.
I have had a car with more than 10 litres in the tank on a slight slope not start due to starvation at the pump.
Having 12 volt straight to the pump is a good idea!! Magnas the pump energizes in the start positon and then it gets power once the alternator excites or the fuel relay takes over from memory. Safety in case of a car accident and the pump will stop.
DId the carby have any charcoal particles in it when you dismantled it as i had one where the charcoal cannister failed inside and allowed charcoal to be sucked up the vacuum pipe into into the carby causing all sorts of horrendous problems!!! Replacement charcoal filter did the same thing would you believe!!! SO now it has been disconnected. When i got it the thing was only running on three cylinders due to charcoal getting mashed on a valve seat and keeping it open slightly!!
If the carby is ok next stop is spark and timing.
Check to see if the spark plugs are wet at all from fuel and the gap is not too big as starting a cold engine with a spark gap to big is another possible cause. Not too many more things to check with a carby car. Vee

Not too many nice wagons left circulating!! Some cheap new distributors available on ebay!!
Way cheaper then the $199 i spent on one a couple of years back due to the shaft seal leaking and you cannot get the seal anywhere!!
So didya just swing the distributor each way a little while cranking until it fired?? Vee

Yeah i have some pics if you wanna see because if i cant get it to go i will try and sell it if i get a reasonable offer on it.
When we had the first cylinder on TDC we checked the rotor button and it seemed to be spot on. So we tried to advance / retard whilst cranking it and there was no improvements. So at the moment i have the plugs out and have to clean them up and reset the gaps with the feeler guages but as magna man mentioned to me to check the vac pipes on the dizzy so that will be next and i will see how i go from there.
May as well chuck a couple pics up.
