Little background story, and i hope some people feel a bit of pain for me.

JB had a big 30% off car audio the other night, so i went down with the intent to get a new headunit, which i did and looked at new splits and an amp. Was offered a JL 2 Chan amp for $220ish and JL splits down from $380ish to low $200s plus my headunit for $650 . Didn't have the money on me, so i had to get my headunit only

*end sad story about not getting wicked audio cheap as!*

I've installed everything else in a car, bar a headunit, so this is the final frontier.

Now, with this new headunit I've got it'll be a matter of cutting old wires and matching the colours up, correct? Using one of the diagrams I've found on the forums. Just need confirmation.

Secondly, this headunit has the option of dimming down the lights, when my headlights are turned on, much like the dash does. Is there any wire available to hook it up to so i can use that feature?

Thirdly this might save me some time, can i pull the old pioneer unit out and have that plug fit into my new pioneer unit? (hoping someone might have some insight on this to save myself setting aside 2 hours instead of 30 minutes)

This is the unit btw, http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/products/25/121/61/DEH-8350SD/index.html

Block of text is done.

Thanks AMC

Get a adapter kit from autobarn, much easier. Plus there is already wiring in the car for dim feature.

Honestly, get the adapter as it fits straight on without any moding and then you just match up the wires from then.

The same plug might work, but may have changed.

The dimming option on the headunit should be automatic, you shouldn't need to wire it in specially.

The installation e.g. cutting and soldering of wires is pretty simple but if you're lazy (like me) or if you want to be able to return to stock or easily change over to another HU in the future, just pickup some wiring harness adapters (AERPRO) and plug it in. You'll need one from Mits to OEM and then from OEM to Pioneer - the only other thing you'll have to do from there is locate a good point to hook the ground wire onto and you're away.

Pioneer used about 4 different plugs over the years, you might be lucky if the old unit isn't too old.

If you use an adaptor, take the head unit with you when you buy one so you get the right one. I didn't and had to go back. lol

DEH-8350SD is on Ebay for less than $200. How price competitive is JB HiFi?

Ill have to see if an adaptor was used in the initial install, might save a few $$ on buying more than i need

was ticketed at $359, then dropped to $197.
A lot of the big ticket items dropped a considerable amount, and i dont use ebay often, far far far to many hassles.

Same price then, best to buy local for the warranty.

I hate the current merchandising hype like this "30% off" sale. It's common for big retailers to advertise high "normal" prices on items, like $359 for this radio, then have a "special" price like $197 which is the normal price anyway. Pays to ignore these so called price drops and compare prices before you buy.

If it's a new pioneer, last time I looked aerpro hadn't realised an adapter yet.

Even so I would (and did) just buy the magna aerpro harness and cut into that. That way in future you simply unplug the loom and you're back to stock. The plugs are only about 10 bucks and allows you to join wires outside of the car. Then just simply plug and play.

was given good prices on the JL amps which were great but didnt have the $$ for it :(

but there isnt many places to buy locally, so pretty much forced to either buy from them or get it from overseas which is a lot harder on warrenty

i dont think its an 11 model, cause the site says the manual was released in early 10, so there should be a harness out for it.

M4DDOG is spot on, you'll save the cost of one adaptor, if you buy the ISO to Late Magna adaptor, trim off the ISO plugs and solder to the Pioneer plug in the box. ( you'll need a soldering iron though)
The aerpro harnesses are handy, but cheaply made, the less connections you make with these the better, the most important, being the earth, which doesn't run through the harness anyway.
