Here is a Saturday morning question for the group.
TJ series 2 wagon will not start. Car was purchased with the 6g72 not the 74. Was recently serviced and had the injectors cleaned.
New battery. Rough idle, smooth at speed. Smell of petrol from exhaust. Spanner icon has appeared on cluster display. Battery indicator light is on and off spasmodically.

Wife drove to the in-laws this morning with our new 2 week old daughter and now the car wont start...if there is nothing my thoughts are battery/alternator...

The floor is now open to ideas.

if theres absolute no electrics on, then i'd change battery and alternator :) and I'm pretty sure that the TJs came as a 3.5 not a 3L...... unless someones slapped a TJ front on it.. LOL

or unless someones changed the motor and thought the 74 and 72 look the same so they just put the motor in to get it running but who knows...

The previous owner replaced the engine with the 72, I'm guessing because it was cheaper. when I pointed it out to the dealer he dropped the price. I plan on putting the 74 back into it some time in 2012.

Makes SFA difference if a 72 or 74, is a common conversion, plus the car was running

Questions, does the car crank but not start or is it totally dead with no electrics at all.

Spanner is just the service icon, will dissapear after 500km or you can manually reset it.

If is cranking but no start, start with the immob receiver and the wire, make sure the plug is secure. Smell of fuel from exhaust may be a sticky injector, may also be other issues causing rich mixture but doubt the whole motor is flooding to be honest as it would be rare for all 6 injectors to stick

And the answer is...alternator.
11.57 volts at the battery while running...drops to 10 under load
