Looking at buying a car, did a REVS check and it came back saying there's a current recorded interest on the car. Start date 23/02/2007 end date 16/02/2012. Does this mean the car is definitely still under finance or could it have already been paid off and that doesn't show? Found the car on eBay for a really good price and they are apparently leaving the country this week, which is why the price is so good. What do you all think? Did I get lucky or too good to be true...
Edit: car is 2001 TJ VRX for $5k
revs checks list the reason the interest was recorded mate, just check the revs cert
if you do decide to purchase ( if theirs a revs interest, i wouldnt just to be on the safe side) remember this from the revs t&c
REVS certificate is valid for as long as you own the vehicle or boat, provided that you complete the purchase of the vehicle or boat before midnight of the day following issue of the certificate.

Ask the seller, he might use the money to settle the loan or he might even have paid it off early! If I was in your shoes I'd buy it. Although if he defaults you'll be out of pocket for no more than a thousand. He's got just 2 months left on the loan at about $70 a week owing.

The interest is from Esanda finance, no actual reason stated? Tho obviously it was to buy the car. So there's definitely still money owing on it then?

Ok, will check with seller then. One other thing, on the certificate under Varient/series it says "sports/TJ", should that not say VRX?
ffs never take a sellers word on how much the car has owing or if he plans to pay the outstanding amount, call the company that holds the finance with the vin / rego numbers and ask them for the story
as for the sports / vrx issue it does get screwed up on the form from time to time best option is to call mits with the vin and make sure its a geniune vrx or check the compliance plate ... vrx's were numbered
and like the revs site states if their is money owing, get 2 cheques / money orders one for the seller, one for the finances mob
i cant count on both hands the amount of times ive seen on ebay / gumtree - leaving country must sell .. only to see the same people selling something else in 2 months time

Oh I was going to ask to see proof that the loan was finished. Didn't realise I could just ring the finance company, much easier.

You have the vin and the name of the finance company. Give them a buzz tomorrow.
Agree with ole mate above with the overseas story.

Ahh I'm feeling nervous now! Will ring Mitsu and Esanda tomorrow. My dads going to view the car tomorrow night. It's in another state from me. They are apparently leaving the country tues, were going for a loan tomorrow so told her I may not have the funds but could put a deposit on till loan comes through. I was expecting her to say no, but she said we might be able to work something out. Not leaving themselves much time to sell the car and have it collected... The more I think about it the more dodgy it sounds. But on the chance that its for real and they are just badly organised, for the price I guess it's worth at least exploring it a little further... Checked her previous listing, wasn't many things and none were cars.
Tho easy enough to create different eBay accounts...
yep, used to be you needed a credit card to sign up with ebay to weed out multiple / dodgey accounts... now its one of the top 5 spots to sell a stolen car in aus

Ahh. Came back to ask if you knew the outcome of these other "leaving country" bullshit eBay cars. Report said it wasnt reported missing/stolen tho? Is there any other way I can check it's legit?
nah mate, people seem to use " leaving country" as a quick way to try and sell there cars imho..
if revs says not stolen its not stolen

Ok well that's good. Fingers crossed I just got lucky and there's no finance issues! Thanks so much for all the help :) Stressing a little less now lol
i know the feeling, i stress every time i buy a new car right up untill its in my name with the rta
i revs check every car i buy for me and help mates with, i even offer to sell them with any car i sell if people want one to help settle their minds

With the REVS check only lasting 24 hours, would it be in my best interest to do get another on day of purchase? Or is that not nessecary?
Think I'm mainly stressing cos I'm buying a car (hopefully) that I can't personally go and check out, and it's all happened faster than what I was expecting. And kinda weird that she seems happy to take a deposit and my word on rest of payment once loan goes through. I mean, I know I'm going to keep my word but if the situation was reversed I don't think I would sell it to me. She doesn't know me from a bar of soap!

Because car would be changing state registration does that mean I will need to get roadworthy cert for qld when I register it here? Sorry for sooo many questions! Got all this crap running through my head, I should be long asleep by now!
ok
revs cert - yes buy another just as you take ownership ... that way your covered from the revs guarentee - check site for coverage details
deposit - if i was leaving the country in 2 days as this woman claims to i wouldnt take a deposit im guessing their saying their leaving the country to find a quick buyer - either way means their up for a quick sale and you have room to bargain
rego - yep differant state means you will need a new blue slip ( think they just call them saftey slips in qld) however you have a certain amount of time to change the states rego over so once you get it, get your saftey done asap to leave you time to fix any issues and then you will need to go to qld roads with the saftey slip and new 12month green slip... from their they will cancel the existing rego from the other state, and you will put a new registration ( 12months) onto the car, at this time you will be expected to hand over the other states plates and receive qld plates.............
so despite car price you will need cash for the following
transport - if its in another state how you getting it to you, car carrior or driving it ... if driving youll need fuel money, food and drink dollars if on a long trip, and possibily a slip from the states road agency ( qld roads, rta, etc) which can range in price from 31.00 to 100ish depending on state you may not need one or you might
saftey cert - no idea what qld charge but in nsw the blue slip is the equivilent and down here they are 54.00 roughly
green slip - depending on age, in nsw your looking from 230 to 620 once you hit 30 it starts getting cheap and gets progressivly cheaper each year over 30
plate fee - in nsw this is 39.00 no idea about qld
rego fee - in australia if your on certain types of goverment payments they wave this fee ( not all payments just some) otherwise you will have to check qld roads site for price
stamp duty - this depends on how much you actually paid for the car starts at 21.00 and goes up at certain dollar amounts qld roads should have a estimate calculator on their site
ANY REPAIRS ON SAFTEY - this can range from 0.00 right upto a few grand depending on state of the car and what the inspecters see it needs for rego
all of qld's prices should be on the qld road site so check that site out for all the prices youll need to put aside on top of the rego cost
also check the qld roads site to see how long you have to xfer it into your name - normally if you dont do it in their timeframe they slap a extra " late fee" onto the stamp duty however sometimes it is easier to pay this late fee and drive around with the other states rego for a couple months while you sort out the new rego ( check if this is legal to do in qld) also some people are know to be basterds and cancel the rego on the car once its sold so your always better off putting it in your name asap

What's a green slip for? Thought I only needed a safety cert. Changing states?

Ok reg runs out on 24 dec, they've said it can be negotiated to give an extra 3 months rego if need be. Should I get them to do this? Or just apply for the traders plates that will let me drive the car for 48 hours or whatever till I can get it registered here. So much more complicated when changing states :s

Trade plates are the easiest way to go about it.
I'd call the Esanda finance group (pretty sure this is ANZ) and ask whats actually owing on the vehicle. If there is still money owing I'd do what someone mentioned above about writing 2 cheques, 1 for the finance company and 1 for the person selling. The last thing you want is to be stuck with their loan AND have paid them for the car.

I was in finance for several years, part of my role was doing repo's on cars with finance
No revs check will stop a repo from you through the courts if the revs check showed finance being on the vehicle at the time of purchase. The only time the revs check protects you is if you purchase the vehicle with clear title and then a mortgage is then added post purchase
SImply put, does not matter how cheap this car is, dont buy it unless it has clear title. Go ahead and call the finance company, they will tell you the same thing I told many people "sorry due to the pricacy act we are unable to advise you if we have any dealings with the person you are asking about" simply they can not tell you anything.
Call the owner and advise them that unless they can show clear title you can not purchase the car. You will require this to be shown on REVS. They may be legit and be intending to pay out the car, if this is the case, when you pay for the car arrange to meet them at the finance company where you can pay the finance company in person with them there and then they can get the finance company to advise you that the facility is paid in full
Dont fall for this if not genuine as I have repossessed many cars from third parties when they were either spun bullshit or did not do the relevant checks. Unfortunately it is still possible to transfer ownership in Australia on a vehicle while there is an interest registered. This is a law that needs to be urgently changed to stop innocent people being duped

Oh, one other thing, makes no difference if you purchase registered or not and makes no difference on when the interest expires as the finance company can reniew the interest upon expiry and the interest is based on Vin and Engine number, not on registration number

Esanda wouldn't tell me if or how much was owing on the car?

Ok thanks. I gotta feeling this is dodgy, we shall see.

$800 owing on the car, she's happy to pay that out before money exchanges hands
there ya go dude, tell here to pay it out and get a letter from here finance declaring the amount has been paid in full and they intend to remove the interest mark on the vin and then rerun yur revs check
just do it before you pay in fulll for the car

Ok, will check with seller then. One other thing, on the certificate under Varient/series it says "sports/TJ", should that not say VRX?
Technically speaking the VR-X is an 'option pack' for the TJ Sports. This is reflected on the VIN.
I would double check the VIN to be safe, but I wouldn't stress too much.
If there is still money owing I'd do what someone mentioned above about writing 2 cheques, 1 for the finance company and 1 for the person selling. The last thing you want is to be stuck with their loan AND have paid them for the car.
That's what my dad suggested we do when we bought my VR-X. There was money still owing to the finance company, so we wrote two cheques, one to the finance company for the amount owing, and the remainder to the seller. No dramas.

Once she pays the $800 owing and Esanda have received it, what's the timeframe for that to show up on a REVS cert?

Walk away! That's what I would do.
..GONE..

If she can supply you with a letter showing a clear title, thats when I would proceed.
Otherwise.. I'm a little suss.
