I very much doubt that it can. Contaminants introduced into the oil/crap oil/not regular enough oil changes could do that...

Whats up with your car Kurt??

I have had 2 cars now where 380 cams have been fitted and then some months later there has been a small amount of valve stem seal smoke, I have looked into this a little, my opinion and not engineering fact is that some oils will leave a lot of varnish behind, Magnatec is one of those oils. With the slight amount of extra lift I have the thought that the varnish is pushing onto the seals and causing them to wear.

One of these cars we did a loooong engine flush and then refilled with HPR10, most but not all of the smoke went away, what is left is after a very long idle and is only a bare puff if that

Yeah my stem seals are going in the TJ, mechanic has recommended a thicker oil to try and put off on replacing the seals.
I definately noticed when I put E10 in when I was up Sydney way that it was blowing more smoke than normal.

I'm going to have to fix this before it becomes a bigger problem me thinks

Yup,
Oil consumption went out of control after an engine oil change with Magnatec.
Nothing after seemed to make it better until I followed advice to flush and change to HPR10.
I would have needed to top up a litre since changing- hardly any difference in oil level so far.
Smoke after idling at traffic lights then pulling away and the occasional strong oil smell in the car has gone.

So as Mal has said several times.
Big flush, use flushing additive.
Change to Penrite HPR10.
