Hi,

Asking a question here on behalf of a co-worker.

He has a 2000 TJ Series 1 Advance and his A/C Compressor died.

He has been quoted like $800 for a new one, second hand ones are considerably cheaper.

Before I start on his behalf a wanted to buy thread, wanted to see firstly according to other AMC Members who have had experience with AC's and Compressors, if they advise just going brand new, or whether second hand is just as effective. Is this the sort of part that is laying around in big numbers or is is something that doesn't generally fail and hence supplies are limited in the second hard scene?

Thats all I got, thanks, again prices mentioned about were a part only supply, no labour here at all.

I'd go second hand personally as long as it was guaranteed. It will also cost another $200 for gas and dryer PLUS a few hundred for the labour if fitting the compressor. Sometimes it's cheaper/easier to sell the car and buy another! When you say the compressor is dead, do you mean it is making a noise from the front of the compressor or has seized or whatever?......front bearings can be replaced.

i replaced mine with a second hand unit but really its a hit and miss unless you actually see it in action

The ones I have are tested on the car, vaccumed and then sealed. I sell them for $115 and am yet to have one returned

The new ones are by far the better option but then again why by the time you spend on the comp, degas, install, filter and regas spend upwards of $1200 on a car that may only be worth 4k
