I've heard great things about this oil, so I enquired about it at Repco today. There was none on display but they had some "out the back".

What worries me is that it was rated SL whereas the Motul website shows it to be SM, so I'm wondering whether its old stock.

Can anyone using it tell me whether their last pack was SM?

BTW its about $76 before any discounts (I have a 20% discount voucher for providing Repco with my email address. It has to be used by the end of this month).

Since posting the above I've rung Valvoline to ask why Synpower 0W-40 is rated SJ (as shown on the pack at Repco). He said it is now SL & Repco must have old stock!

I used this on my last service.. Its now 9800ks and the oil has only just started to discolour.. Still no tappet noise or anything like that.

I'm going to service her with the same oil again next service and see how it goes.. Heads up though.. It's not too cheap.. I paid $53 for a 4 or 5 litre bottle.

Just my 2cents, a good oil should discolor earlier on, it shows that is cleaning the soot from the motor how ever with regular servicing a motor shouldn't be too dirty to have such an affect on oil, i believe oil colour is a bad indication of whether the oil itself is any good or not.

How ever ..Gone.. seems to have good results from the oil and it'd want to be good for $53 a bottle :p.

She normally gets an oil change at least every 5000ks.. so I'm "HOPING" she's a clean motor!

I've been happy with it but TBH.. Now that I think about it.. The Penrite stuff I had been using for ages also came out looking pretty clean before I changed to Motul.

Toss up between the two and I'd say nearly 70-80% of people on here use Penrite and love it.. Nearly all of the everyday mechanics I've been to use the stuff, even some performance workshops.

Brand biased - Slightly - I've used Motul in nearly all of my cars and they've all lived on to do great Ks - Except my TF (That used to burn whatever it was fed, so it was fed whatever the local used)

AE82Corolla - 371,000ks so far - Still going
AE86 Corolla with 20v SilverTop 4AGE - 191,000ks on the motor so far and the guy still comes to visit me and still uses 101 Motorcafe to service it
AE92 Corolla GTi - 4AGE Smallport - 241,000ks - Still Serviced by 101
67 Datsun 1000 - 98,000 miles - Sounds brand new
Brothers Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart - 70,000ks - Runs beautifully

So I am a little biased.. But after the run of these cars using Motul so far.. They've been great!

I'm almost certain that the x-cess was shown as SM on the Motul site the other day, but its now shown as SN. Doesn't necessarily mean its any different/better - the SM might have already met the new SN standard.
Anyway I've found a Repco store with some SM x-ceed.

Update - I went to the second Repco store & found that while their Motul X-cess was rated SM it had a manufacture date of December 2010. I didn't want to take the risk that some of the additives had deteriorated (especially when it was an expensive oil) so I left it.

The SL rated Motul at the first store could be 2 or more years old.
