AMC,

with my KF Verada, the engine light sometimes stays on, and results in the car just turning over, not starting.

however, it does sometimes go off at after a few minutes.

Any rough diagonosis of what it COULD be causing this?

i was told whatever the error is i cant find out unless the light stays and is hooked up to the computer according to my mechanic.

I do have a rear rocket cover gasket leak, and power steering fluid does drink if that might help

Can you clarify, is the car not starting at all, ever? Or when it does then the engine light stays on?

when the engine light stays on, it just turns over, does not start.

when the light is off, it starts perfectly fine.

Surprised you haven't had any more responses, someone else may know about 3rd gens more than me, but is it possible that the light is just on because it comes on before you start the car like some cars do?

Is the real problem that sometimes your car won't start and just tries to turn over?

When the engine light is on then hook up a grounded cable to Pin 1 on the plug under the drivers side steering wheel/footwell. If you look in the footwell, under the driver dask, on the left side - next to the centre console, there is a black plug. This is where the MUTII would be plugged in to diagnose any problems. Grab a speaker cable and wire it to a paper clip on one end and the other to a grounding point in the car (I took out the bottom of the centre console and attached the cable to a bolt). Connect the cable into the 1st pin closest to the centre console and the pedals. When you have correctly grounded the wire and selected the correct pin - the engine light will flash. This flash corresponds to a certain number which should indicate the problem. The way to read the flashes is described in the AMC wermspoke WIKI (http://www.wermspowke.net/wiki/index.php/Engine#How_can_I_read_a_fault_code_from_the_ECU_wi thout_a_MUT-II.3F).

Good luck! Hope this helps. Sorry I don't know what else to say.

Excuse my ignorance, but I'd imagine the ECU has a memory that logs recent faults so it should not necessary for the engine light to be on when doing this test. Or am I completely wrong?

Nothing to do with ECU etc, is the Immob eiher the wire is not connected properly OR the immob itself is not functioning, the check light is in short telling you there is an issue, it thinks someone is trying to pinch your car

I seem to have gotten confused with the "Check Engine" warning light instead of the "Engine" light. :iough: :facepalm

comes on like all cars do, but stays on and usually goes off after a few seconds like it should. it does turn over sometimes and start with the light on, but if it comes back on after it goes off, it just wont start

i dont know where the immob is in the car :(
i do have two keys for it, might that be an issue perhaps?

If it is the immob then you may need to take apart the dash plastics under the steering wheel and around the ignition barrel. Take off the large plastic panel under the steering wheel/dash in the footwell and then you'll find the screws holding up the ignition surround. Around the ignition is a circlular plastic piece with coil wrapped around it and a cable connecting to the coil. Commonly, the connection between the ignition barrel coil and that cable frays and needs to be reconnected/fixed. Sometimes just bending it is enough but more often than not it needs to be resoldered.

I've started to get exactly the same issue

Turn the ignition key 3/4 and wait for the lights to go off one by one before firing it up but sometimes the Engine light is still illuminated. If it stays illuminated the car wont start at all and the engine just turns over. I then take out the keys, wait 10 seconds and then on repeat most of the time the engine light goes out and the car starts no problem but on some occasions it take 3 repeats

This can happen first thing in the morning or even when I've been out for the day and turned the engine on and off at different locations so it's not temperature related.

Car is a Magna 2004 TL with 119,000km

Hope someone can offer some advise please as I imagine this may have happened to a fair few people.

Thanks,

Andrew
