Hey chaps,

I'm looking at getting my stock sound replaced with new gear. Budget is aim for $1000-1250. Nothing hugely fancy, here's my plan:

New head unit: Single DIN Kenwood KIV-700 ($440) & a single DIN pocket.
New fronts: Not sure how big the stock speakers are but I'm looking for a stock look. Are they standard 5" woofers? What about the tweeter, what size is that/is that replaceable without ruining the grille? I'd like to get splits to replace the stock stuff and keep the grilles.
New rears: Straight swap if possible. What size are the stock speakers?
New sub: Was hoping for either 10" or 12", and I'd like a custom box made up for it to look flush on the right side of the boot before the wheel well. How much does it cost to have a basic box made up for that area, trimmed to match the boot carpet?
New amp: I have no idea about amps unfortunately. Will I only need one or one for speakers and one for sub?
Install: How much would all this cost including any wiring etc.? Is Dynamat worth looking into and how much for that?

I'm not looking for recommendations on products as such, although if you have suggestions on where to buy and what to look for that'd be great. Basically to recap, my questions are;

* Is what I've outlined above reasonable/possible?
* Can the stock fronts and tweeters be replaced with splits while keeping the stock grilles? What size are the front woofers & tweeters?
* What size are the rear speakers?
* How much does it cost to have a basic box made up to look flush behind the wheel well on the right, trimmed to match the boot carpet?
* Do I need a seperate amp for the sub or will one do it all? Anything I need in a sub?
* How much will installation & wiring cost for all this?
* Is Dynamat worth looking into/how much is it?

Cheers fellas!

The stock front speakers are 6". The tweeters in the A panel pods are 25mm. Rear speakers are 6x9".

I was quoted $300 ago for a custom 12" box to fit in the wheel well corner. This was around five years ago so I would budget $300-400.

Given your budget, you'd probably be best off buying a 4 channel amplifier, and running both the front splits and the sub off your amp. A dedicated monoblock amp is preferable for a sub, but like I said, you just don't have the money for it.

I'd probably drop upgrading your 6x9s too, as they're not important - they're usually faded out so you can barely hear them.

I would budget around $100-150 for wiring. Installation by a professional would be a couple of hundred - it would also depend on whether you bought the components through them too.

Dynamat is definitely worth looking into, but it's around $200 for a bulk pack, which would give you basic coverage of your front doors and boot. Personally, if you're on a budget install, I wouldn't be too fussed about not using it.

Sounds like I need to bump my budget up then, wiring and the box both cost more than I figured, gonna need some shit equipment to keep to that budget. Might look at $1500-1750 instead. Maybe a hard limit of $2k, I don't wanna go overboard on sound for a Verada GTV which is only worth $10k private.

Good tip on the rears too, I might leave them if that's the case. You mentioned the tweeters are 25mm, which is just short of an inch by my reckoning. Most of the aftermarket ones I'm seeing are one inch tweeters, are they likely to fit in those pods without cutting anything?

Any brands I should be paying attention to or staying away from for any the components?

Maybe it's an inch. I'm not sure lol For what it's worth, I'm running a set of Alpine Type R splits, and the tweeters fit fine in the A pillars.

Finding a lot of options are 6.5" woofers :(

Might open this up a bit to you smarter with car audio gear guys. You've got a Verada and a $1500 hard limit. You don't need a source unit but you need everything else.
What do you buy?

Probably should have mentioned that 6.5" woofers fit fine :P You'll need new mounting holes for the woofer, but the stock speaker mounts are only plastic, so it's no issue.

Would you build any of the sub box yourself, or do you want the entire thing ready to go?

I'm not handy at all so I'd probably want it ready to go. I was thinking though, what if I just bought a prebuilt box, cut off the front and glued another bit of MDF on instead of that which was the right size for behind the wheel well? So like it was one flush panel glued to the front edge but behind that just a stock box? I'm not sure if that makes sense. It does in my mind lol

Did you want it inbetween the wheel wells, or along the side between the wheel well and the taillight backing?

Along the side between the tail light housing and the wheel well. I've seen it done previously and quite like the look of it, plus I retain my boot pass through and depth.

I can help out with a fiberglass backing for the box, but don't have time to finish any completely for a while.

If you did that, how much and what would I need to do to finish it?

Depends how thick I need to get it to make it solid enough as to how much materials it costs, need to trim the edges back to where you want it to sit, and cut a piece of mdf or similar to fit the front, cut out the speaker hole and fiberglass on the mdf and fiberglass it in through the hole. Are you planning on running a regular type of sub or something higher powered? Once I get the mould off it I'll be able to measure with water and get a box volume calculation.

Bumpity bump! Alright guys, been looking a fair bit more into this and have an idea for the components and setup I want, but I still need to know how to put the sub in the boot nicely. To that end, I found someone else who has done exactly what I want for my sub here:

More than likely I'd just mount my amp somewhere inside that space to the left of where the sub is, if there is room. The sub has a mounting depth of 6 and a half inches which is easy in that space. The amp and sub I am looking at are:

How much am I looking at to emulate whats in that picture for the sub and mount the amp behind there or, if not possible, just on the front somewhere?

For what it's worth, don't set your budget around the value of your car. Most of the gear is transferable and can travel from car to car with you as you update. All you'll do by limiting the quality of what you buy with such a budget is put a bigger hole in your wallet long term. Budget what you can actually afford, and get the best you can with that budget. You'll just end up wasting money upgrading trying to chase satisfaction with many parts left over in the process. Trust me, I've done it plenty.

That's Asylum's install isn't it? I think he said his install costs were around the $1k mark (I took note because I was quite envious of it too).

EDIT: I was wrong. It was $1500 (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62633).
