Does the car change gear when you shift at all?

Easy way to see is if you have an aftermarket stereo. Someone may have damaged the plug. Best bet is to pull the plastic from around the lever, the part with the drink holdrs ect, abnd check the plugs going into the shifter.

But if your not confident, take it to a mitsu dealer or a-grade mech

If it's them re-arranging some plugs from where you've been told to look, they might not charge you at all for 2 minutes work.

My opinion only, but once you take the car either to Mitsubishi or an auto-elec and ask them the fix your particular fault, you are handing them an open cheque - and the reason I say this is because you are not aware of what is causing the actual fault.
So, again my opinion only, but the simplest option is to live with it. Many owners never use this feature except just after they buy their Magna...and never again.....or rarely if ever.

From what I can gather, you're putting it into tiptronic, the light lights up for the gear you're in, and when you go to change it, it goes back to D?

Are you moving when you do it? If you're going at 50km/h, and tip it down a gear, what happens? IIRC you can only launch from 0km/h in 1 or 2.

Have a squiz at the manual, as my model isn't a tippy (TH Exec) and see if it's trying to tell you something by going to D. Otherwise your transmission might be stuffed, or theres a problem between the shifter and the box, becoming appearent when it's in tiptronic, and chucking back to auto.

Is the car driving well otherwise? so performance problems, or trouble with the transmission?

Didnt drive through water, cop a decent bump or have any other recent electrical issues?

There are three switches in the shifter - one to shift into, or out of, sports mode. And two switches to shift gears when in sports mode (one up and one down). Te run to a plug that is attached to the shifter itself. Pretty hard to plug it into the wrong thing I think.

I'd be checking that plug and the switches with a multimeter. After I had good look for bare or broken wiring.

If it just "happened" without there being any recent changes to the car this is where I'd start. If something was changes/updated/repaired/broken just prior to the problem occurring I'd start there.

Would say is a shifter fault, if you are getting it to shift across and show the gear light, the tippy selector switch is working in itself. YOu may have an issue with something loose in the shifter or the tippy switch itself may be playing up, may have had something spilt in or around the shifter and made contact dirty
