This is embarrassing to report but might help someone.
I had noticed the red "replace seatbelt" warning showing on the driver's belt (I think these belts with rip-stiching were used from 2001). Checked the l/h belt - it was showing the warning also.
I should have investigated thoroughly - I've seen no evidence that the car was ever in a collision - but I bought a new pair of belts.
After installing the first one I examined the original - no sign of damage & all the stiching in place.
Eventually realised that the sleeve that covers both the warning & the head of the retaining bolt had slipped down on both sides!
The old belts were slightly frayed & the retractors didn't work the best so not a total waste.
Glad I got the new pair for much less than the $520 the dealer quoted.
