View Full Version : Occasional overheating TL Magna

TL Magna - Dedicated LPG .. No coolant leaks and just flushed and changed coolant.
Idling for a long time or going up a long hill in 35deg weather the temp gauge will go over half way.. maybe 1 or more notches.
I used to think it was just the fan not kicking in .. but now its doing it a bit up hills in hot weather.
Anyone else have this and consider it normal? ... could be thermostat or water pump?
it could be thermostat, and also the magnas have (i think) 3 fan speeds, it could be 2, im sure someone here will know, if the fan only has the highest setting fan speed left, your car will run a little hotter then normal.

Thermostat? water pump? Easy does it. Check the simple stuff first;
Hand brake working fine? Not over adjusted? How is performance otherwise?
Got coolant in there? What colour is the coolant, any oil residue in it?
Check your engine and transmission oils.
Overflow not blocked? Radiator cap in good condition?
Checked the fans are actually switching on? If the fans arent switching on I'd be checking fuses and then testing the temperature switch before checking the fans themselves.
Lastly I'd check the operation of the gauge itself. Its a long shot but I'd be looking to hang onto my pennies until the last minute.
If the coolant is clear, and the fans are switching on I'd run the car down to a radiator specialist to have the system checked.
Check your radiator for grasshopers/bugs etc which may be blocking the airflow. Most cars that have electric cooling fans are designed so the the fans will not come on when the car is over a certain speed so in theory if the car still gets hot going up a hill at a respectable speed it should not be the fans. Has you economy suffered of late?

My KH does this too. Has done it ever since I can remember. If you find the solution, I'd love to know!

ok an update on this... Took the car to Mitsubishi as they said this wasnt normal... They put genuine mitsi coolant in and put a new thermostat in....
Car still does exactly the same thing... eg driving up a hill in 35 degrees the needle will go two notches over half way then gradually come back down to half... Rang up Mitsubishi again and explained what it was still doing and they said now that its normal for the car to do this as long as it goes back down to halfway again...
hmm.... (weird that they said it wasnt normal before i took it in... but after getting it back and its still doing it they said its normal)
what do you guys reckon?

Mine does this as well in anything over low 30 degree weather and it gives me the irrates because I think what if it doesn't go back down.

Mine does it when labouring , and it doesnt have to be 30 degrees. always pray it goes down and it does when it reaches 2 notches up.
in tippy mode or if its driving non granny style it actually drops half a notch. What am i to think ?
i asked this question before on here and interesting that I am not alone

Had the same problem with my TJ VR-X, changed the thermostat and all cool after that, never goes above 1 notch below half.

How long since you replaced the radiator cap? (While you would assume the Mitsubishi dealer pressure tested it, you never know).

Looks like you can get various temp thermostats from rockauto at 170, 180 and 192. I'm not sure if hotter is better or cooler?

I had the same problem, checked all three relays, fans kicked in on time, changed thermostat-still the same. Then replaced $10 temperature sensor and problem fixed. Worth a try!
BTW get only genuine thermostat, aftermarket ones are rated at lower temp than required.

hmm ok ill see if i can buy a temp sensor from mitsubishi.... Worth a go....
Its funny that i told them the needle was going over half way and they said it wasnt normal and bring it in and we will fix it.... Then one coolant change and thermostat later it still does it ..
Then I tell them the problem still exists and they now say its normal to go over half way as long as it goes back down...
A bit peeved because I had just done a coolant change myself with Tectalloy and the mitsi guys said that could also be the problem not using Mitsi coolant...
