View Full Version : Sound cutting in and out!

Hey guys, I've got a problem that I can't figure out to save my life.
My car audio cuts in and out when I'm driving, over bumps, turning etc. Sometimes the sound is fine when I start the car and don't move. I installed a new head unit, I knew that wasn't going to solve the problem, I needed a new one anyway, but I still had hopes
When I installed a new head unit I bought 2 adapters to just plug in and play, the HU works perfectly, just the sound, so I'm cancelling that the HU wires are the problem.
I was going to buy new speakers, but that probably won't fix anything if all sound cuts out and not just one speaker etc right?
Any ideas guys?
Cheers

The bump part is a good hint.
Possibly:
Short somewhere in the speaker wires, causing the HU to cut out to protect itself.
Common area for this problem is under the rear parcel shelf. The speaker magnets are exposed, you may have something metallic adhering to it causing a short circuit, or perhaps damaged wiring.
If not there, inside one of the doors.

Would one speaker having problems cause the rest of the speakers to cut out?

As far as I know, yes. Protection circuit in the HU cuts power to the speakers if there is an over temperature or over current problem.
Put a multimeter across the terminals of the rear speakers with the car off and you may find the problem easily. Or just have a look - I'm assuming you have a sedan.

Al right thanks, I'll have a peek tomorrow and see how it looks.

Do you have an amp fitted? If so ensure the ground for it is nice and tight and is actually touching bare metal (remove the paint if need be), if its just the headunit check the ground on that aswell. Loose grounds can be a real price.

No, no amp, it's all stock.
Anyway, I had a look, and it turns out a speaker at the back doesn't work at all, could this be the source of the problem? I'm going to unplug it after lunch and see if it changes anything.
EDIT: Well boys and girls, look like I found the problem.
In the boot you can see the bottom of the speakers, and the WORST wiring job I have ever seen on the left rear speaker, sticky tape was included lol, anyway, I just disconnected it and removed the positive and negative charges and wallah! No more sound cutting in and out, but I gotta replace it now! Ha, so simple!
Thanks for the help anyway, most appreciated.
Cheers
