My nearest SCA is selling the new, fully synthetic HPR5 for $44 - the same as the semi synthetic its replaced. Has anyone seen price increases - it might be worth stocking up where it can be bought at the old price. Other Group 3 oils are $60 - $64.
I doubt that there is a cheaper oil that meets Mercedes 229.5 and BMW Long Life-01 and Porsche A40 specs. The 229.5 means that its good (in a Merc) for 2yrs/45000km.
Penrite didn't show the HT/HS figure so I enquired - its a very good 3.9, helped by the fact that HPR5 is a relatively thick 40 grade (15 cSt @ 100 degrees, so nearer to the 50 than the 30 end of the range).
HPR10 is selling for $40 at Supercheap. It meets Mercedes spec 229.3 which indicates 18mth (or 12mth- not sure)/30000km intervals.
Another new (I think) oil is Nulon High-Performance 0W-40. Its part Groups 4 & 5, so it should be better than the HPR5. Its Base No. is an even better 11.6 & its HT/HS is a lower but still good 3.5.
Oddly it "only" meets MB 229.3 & BMW LL-98 specs - still more than adequate.
I've not seen it anywhere - anyone know the price?
