This never used to happen, but recently happens everytime I start the car.

When starting it only, there is a loud sound coming from (it seems?) the air intake snorkel.

It sounds like a really big, loud, and quick rush of air, either coming in or going out, but I haven't had a chance to get someone to start it for me while I investigate under the bonnet.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Sounds like your air intake. Check that the clips near your filter are secured and also check for cracks along the rest of the intake assembly. I am no expert, so I will happily stand corrected if this isn't right.
