im trying to keep my magna looking fairly stock and was wondering what the KL verada premium sound system sounds like, im not right into having subwoofers etc. just want clear sound with decent bass and clarity. Any comments? Also I should be able to put this system straight into my 03 TJ?

Well mate sound is extremely subjective. Something that may sound good to you could sound terrible to someone else. The best way to know is to actually hear it yourself.

As a general rule - most factory sound setup's are pretty poor. As of late things have improved a bit but car audio always tends to be where savings are made. Unlike my magna - I know the GTVi had a better premium system with a 4disk cd changer and the front speakers were splits with tweeters. Much of the speakers remained the same across the models except the unit changed. To me - the only good mitsu magna system was the Ecplise one in the ralliart's. I've heard the Xi's "Premium" system and for me it was pretty average as best, whereas my mate who owns the car is happy with it.

If you can do it for cheap then I suppose go for it - at least you'll get a double din unit with a cd stacker. It is meant to have a better sound output but its performance will obvioisly be limited by the channels it is released through - i.e. the speakers. Split speakers means that the highs and mids are split allowed for better split of the frequencies and utlimately clearer sound. So over a stock exec system - the GTVi system is already an upgrade. You may need wire a new harness to power the unit as well as having to run cables for the tweeters. I beleive the back 6x9's remain the same and are mostly used for the "bass" (so called).

Personally I'd rather spend my money on aftermarket speakers instead. For $170 you can get Morel Maximo Coax speakers which for the money are fantastic. Morel make competition level equipment and this is bottom of the range budget offering and in many cases would blow away some brands top-of-the-line speakers! (*cough* fusion, cadence *cough*). It should run fine off headunit power. Jump on ebay and buy a second hand aftermarket unit or get a cheapie $100 one with MOSFET 50w or similar. The 50w is the max power and unachievable but these ones usually give off about 20rms watts (actual real power) which is enough for most music styles at normal audible volumes.

...and no mention of sensitivity. On a stock HU, this is far more important that RMS figure

Best bang for buck upgrade..

Eclipse Headunit from a Ralliart Magna.

They really are a fantastic deck and if you can find one in good nick - GRAB IT!

Well I had this problem up until a week ago. My Verada Xi has the "premium" stock sound system too. I will tell you now, there is nothing all that "premium" about it. So anyway, my unit died so I went to JB HiFi and got a $400 Pioneer head-unit for $175. I then went to Super Cheap Auto and bought 1X Mitsubishi ISO wiring harness (1 plug type for us) and the correct ISO connector for my brand of head-unit, they were $14 each so it works out great not having to cut any wires. Plugged the ISO harnesses together and I will tell you now, the aftermarket head-unit sounds much better. The whole system has a lot more clarity and bass lower down. The standard set-up really is average...

Of course it is but I don't know the sensativity of the stock h/u or the gtvi speakers and I have nfi where I can find this information from. I do however know what the rms power of your standard run-of-the-mill "MOSFET" ones tend to give off around 15-20w's. For your average speaker this is about 90db's (at 1meter) which is plenty for most people. Yes, push the morel's hard and you will hit distorsion.....

The KL Premium head unit, was a 6 stacker in dash unit, which also has provision for the steering wheel controls (maybe thats the bit that makes it premium? It will do steering wheel controls?)

It does not play MP3 files, it has no RCA, it is quite a basic headunit really. Its an adequate headunit really, it does the job well, plays music through all speakers and you can get some reasonable volume out of it before distortion (depennding how you have it set up audio wise)

When I still had the premium / factory head unit in my car, it sounded alright - better than most factory headunits of the time - but there are easily better units around.

The Verada did get better (and more) speakers than the magna - with tweaters in the front doors, which can sometimes be a little... harsh and overpowering.
If its just a stepping stone upgrade - dont waste your money and buy two headunits, go straight for the aftermarket head unit. If the KL Premium isnt going to cost you anything to get a hold of, and it will be a short while before you do the next upgrade then its an ok upgrade. Its not really something that you want long term though (mine lasted... 3days before it got replaced with an Alpine head unit!)

Even just putting a better headunit in the car, with the same speakers, will sound heaps better.
