Hi all the clear coat on my Nautilus blue Verada is starting to deteriate, is it possible to have the clear removed and another coat of clear applied with out having to respray the duco again? cheers

Whole respray, unfortunately...

I've tried that. Unfortunately the clear coat is quite hard while the colour coat is quite soft. Rubbing the clear coat back with wet and dry is time consuming and its nearly impossible to not damage the colour coat. Rubbing it back to the primer below the colour coat and then respraying colour and clear is really the only way to go.

Depending on the paint fade due to the 2 pack colour being unprotected you can try to get a body shop to blend, unfortunately blending two pack products is rather difficult. If its just a guard then you can get the whole guard resprayed rather cheap from some places.

I would inquire from a paint and panel expert TBH, take the car down and quiz them.

If the paint underneath is damaged or discoloured at all, definately whole respray.

Or if its only the top bits you could go 2-tone? Black top with tinted windows?

Hi peaandham, its just 4 spots on the boot lid and a small area on the roof, only started about 6 months ago, i will call into a paint and panel place tomorrow and see what they say can be done, thanks for your help, cheers

A good panel shop with an expert colour-matcher would be able to just do the bonnet and the roof by cutting back to the colour layer and then respraying clear coat. It would be a pricey job. Maybe one of those mobile paint and ding repairers might be able to come up with a quick and easy solution...worth a try.

First of all you will never rub down clear coat without damaging colour coat. Cost of respraying is all in prep work, cost of applying colour is really nothing. Clear is what need most attention anyhow like sanding back & polishing. Boot & roof not a cheap exercise expect about $600-900 mark.

I'm sick of looking at the clear coat damage on my roof, so I'm considering just covering over it...
This seems cheap enough :P

I want to get a gloss white though, go for the mini style white roof :D

Just had paint job done to my KJ Verada, front bumper, roof, bonnet, boot, wing blended in to guards and rear quarter got the VRX guard extensions and sill panels done as well in Sable, $1200 at Leongatha Panels all done in PPG 2 Pack. Car looks like new and no more clear coat peel, should have done it a year ago but I also thought it would be expensive.

Or you can do what I just did on a old Hyundai Excel junker, rubbed it back to colour with 125 dry to cut the clear, then 400 wet and dry to get the colour off and then 800 wet and dry on the primer. Resprayed in HiChem Iso Free 2K system in the shed at home. cost about $200 to do roof, bonnet, boot and baby spoiler.
