Hey everyone,

i am trying to fill the void in my new car's stereo, but dont want to put any subs/amps in the boot because it kills its practicality.

all i want to know is:

are the 8/10 inch sub/amp slimline setups that go under your seat any good? talking about one like this (http://www.focalaustralia.com.au/pdfs/acc_Bus25%20flier.pdf).

i dont need it to be loud, i just want it to compliment the stock speakers.

cheers, Tom.

with stock speakers i have to say that it wouldn't be bad but if you ever want to upgrade your speakers do yourself a favor and get a better sub or subs.

cheers fellas. im going into autobarn tomorow to check them out, just for 399 for an 8 inch one, they are very exy. i have 2 12in 1600watt subs in my magna atm, but just dont want to fill up the boot. might go down the lines of getting an oem 10inch box. good part is the car has 2 oem places (for 2 x 10in subs.)

TBH honest if you want to spend the time with a full size (non slimline) 8 or 10 and make a custom box that is suited for the sub while still trying to fit it under the seat (will be tricky but not impossible) then you will get better results.

However if you wanna just slap something under there then by all means have a listen to what is on a demo board (if any) at your local audio shop and decided what YOU like.

For an 8 inch i would probably be looking at the JL 8w, its a beautiful sub, and by all means a good all rounder.

Otherwise the 10 inch version isnt a high up but i think you will be more than happy with it and the price is much cheaper aswell. But for this one and the one above you will need to get some dimensions first.

For that size JL or Boston would be where im looking (however i dont think Boston do many cheaper subs anymore)

My dad's got a 10" Alpine Type S (full size) sub in a custom box in his FPV F6X in that spot. Works a treat.

wow, i do like that. any ideas on the cost of that install? i guess i could just run the amp under the seat, and run cables through to the boot.....

Do it yourself under $100 (Minus Sub Ofcourse). 16mm MDF, Woodglue, Woodscrews, Carpet, Contact Adhesive.

if a magna, there is a recess in the rear parcel shelf for the JDM diamante fitted subwoofer. You could do something with that.

No idea as to install costs - he just got a bill at the end, no break down of costs. And given it was a full Alpine stereo install, it wasn't cheap lol

That's also where his amp is too. He has a 5 channel Alpine PDX amplifier (the ultra-compact series) located underneath the rear seat (no room under the front seats).

i did that in my magna, but new car is in avatar.

i would like to make a similar box myself, but i wouldnt be able to get it to look stock. i might just get that focal i listed, and track down 2 oem rear sub mounts in the mean time. that way when i install them, i can run all three, not be able to see any, and, use a similar 5 chan amp to power upgraded components and 2 subs in oem spots.

Jaycar sell one that is a SHITload cheaper and will be a better bet if you are going for a basic sub to fill in the missing frequencies

Slimline subs aren't really that good, especially when in a box the size of which i would use for a 4" speaker.

You'd probably be better off grabbing some good 6.5" splits. I know the Rockfords i had in the doors of my Ralliart have insane bass when amped properly, so much so that unless you listen to music with very low bass you simply don't need a sub. My dad got the same RF splits to replace the broken door speakers in the lexus, and i find that system fine. That's high praise considering the sub in my room has a habit of making the doors downstairs vibrate.

You have 6.5 in your front doors and 5.25 in your rear doors, so i'd replace all of them with high quality splits and run a 4 channel amp with an equalizer under the seat and see any more bass is actually needed.

And what about your mids if you have the bass cranked hard through the door speakers? Sounds like an awful way to set up an audio system. A sub is required to manage the low notes and leave the mids and trebles to door speakers and tweeters

Matt, if your bass is insane, where does mine rate??????
And Plus 1 to what Dave said. 6.5's generally have a 65-75 Hz cutoff, over powering them below that is insane, quick way to die.....

This might be a bit big.....LINKY (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_37524_VIBE-Audio-LITEAIRC8UA-V1.html?from=857-49)
I thought I saw some rockford amps about the size of two packets of aeroplane jelly......Thats insane......

Well the Ralliarts and Lexus both have 4" dash speakers for the mids, don't know what other speakers the Forester has.

Like i said, it depends how low the bass on your music generally goes.

Herein lies the predicament, how do you know how low your music goes, if you
can't play the lower notes that are probably be there, but you can't play them. You wouldn't know.
Even the kick drum utilizes Sub bass.

When I had my stereo setup for a while without a sub I used the front splits for mid's and high, and setup the rear 6x9's for bass, which the digital designs I have can handle quite well to a certain extent. Ended up with a sub in the car anyway, amps are in the cabin so it takes all of 30 seconds to ditch the sub and change profiles on the headunit if I need the whole boot, wouldn't set this car up any other way now.

Best alternative would be a three-way setup in the front, but even then most mid-basses wont play to the extent of replacing a sub (focal kbe165's come damn close though), and that aside you'll likely have to butcher the door cards to get it all in anyway.
