Ok I dont know why i thought of this, but i couldnt find any other threads on it, so I apolagize if this is in the wrong section. I was mainly interested as to how to tr magna (6cyl and 4cyl ) compare against the commodore of its time, the vp, which as many of you probably know has a v6 3.8 lt in it. If both where stock how does the performance compare between these cars?

vp would go faster in a straight line, but if auto, would not be very punchy at all.
it would use more fuel than a magna, and if both were well maintained, the mage would likely out handle the commo.
reliability, those old commos go forever with the right amount of services, magnas are much the same, but with bad valve stem seals, become a bit smokey.

ah ok thanks. Yeah i suspected the commo would be faster. I dont know much on the difference between the auto and manual in them, but what you said makes sense.
Hate the commodore interiors though, and I like the 2g interior better than my 3g.

haha the commodore interiors are ANCIENT.
they still are. even the VE's are using design techniques german and japanese companies were using 10 years ago

The commodore might have more power, but the Magna in my opinion has far better ride quality & handling and definitely a better design interior and exterior. I like the TR just as much as my old TF and my current TJ.

the V6 Magna would not be far off, if not quicker than a VP.....especially in manual !!

I have owned a few vn/vp's and to be homest they are about the same. I currently have two vs statesmans and they have a little more power then my tr but like bellto has said the auto lets them down. I can say my tr has a much more comfortable ride then my vp had. In my oppinion if magnas where rear wheel drive they would be better, I just cant get use to going straight through corners when you puf your doot down instead of kicking out the back end

Its not just the looks of the interior, the interior in a commo that old is probably shot to hell, all you'd need to worry about in a magna is probably the roof lining
I think VPs were mechanically the same as VNs and 15+ years ago, my 16.4 second 1/4 mile car could easily beat any standard VN Auto in a drag race or traffic light GP.
I'd say that the 3.0L V6 Magna/Verada of the time would easily keep up with a VN/VP Auto and since about most statistics are made up on the spot, about 1% of Commodores were manual and about 20+% Magnas, so the majority of Magna/VP races would result in a draw, and 19% win to Magna and 0.2% win to the Commode.
:)

I went through the entire holden row at u-pull-it elizabeth, didn't see one manual holden. =\

If there was 100 of them, then you should have found 1. :)

You have a very strong stomach. I tried to do that a while back, but the poverty of it all made me feel sick . . . . walked away and looked at the Mitsus instead. Cheered me up no end. Seems that Commodore owners hold on to their cars well beyond the point where a Magna owner gives up trying to keep it on the road.
Nah I think there were only 80 or 90 of them. I'd already been through the mits section twice, and some of the euros.

I have never liked magnas (I know I own one) always had v8's getting a senator next week where I live my bt1 v8 vp handles the corners far better than the magna... My ts feels loose and sloppy.... Still the best ts I have driven

Kicking out the back? In a vp commodore? Do you drive with black steelies on the back? Even in manual form i didn't think oversteer could be a problem for a vp.

Boys, who left the bogun gate open to AMC, Dez, are you really serious, you are comparing a BT1 V8 to a friggin magna, even if you think so I still beg to differ anyway.
You think that a VP handles corners stock better than a TS stock, delusional is all I can say. The VP, VS etc are a crap car in handling, the interiors, well what is left of them is crap. The brakes are crap, the style is crap etc etc and then dont even start with the horrible noise coming through the plastic firewall on those things that holden passed off as cars.........
Personally, I would have a TM GLX carb model before I even pissed on a V anything

Hahaha are you deranged? The last Commodore I drove felt like somebody had taken their tinny and put some lawn mower wheels on it lol
Lets not forget the decrepit automatic transmissions, too.

Totally agree. As old as the TM is, one in good condition will still drive nicer than a VP.
VP's are good........ paddock bashers!

At least a Magna extrudes some class. VP's however, do not.

Comparing handling to what, a bucket of puss lol
Getting in dads v6 VT s-pack was a bit of a let down, coming out of a 4cyl auto TR... And that was before the doors on his car started to rust off.

Trust me you would have been just as dissapointed with the 98 vt's 5L v8 haha.
