I just bought a '92 TR magna, with the sideways 2.6L 4 banger in it. I can select between PRND, but when in D, it won't go any further than 1st gear. It appears that when I lift foot off gas, it will go to 2nd, 3rd, etc, but as soon as I give it a bit of gas again, it jumps back into 1st. So at the moment, I can't go much faster than 30 kmh. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, preferably with out having to change the trans, I will be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Check the fluid level and colour, check all electrical connections to the gearbox for corrosion. Check the TPS on the throttle body for correct function.

The fluid level is good, and has good red colour, still need to check the connections though. Not sure what the TPS is. Can you enlighten me?

TPS = throttle position sensor. Located on throttle body. It tells the ECU how much throttle you have on and determines the gear box shift speeds and firmness.
Multimeter required to check if it's working properly. Procedure is in the manual.
Connections - look for broken wiring, pull the plug off and check the plug and socket for corrosion. Include the 4 pin TPS plug in this check.
As above post, I'm assuming your car is fuel injected.

I have the 2.6L 4c E/W efi motor. had a look at the connections on the TPS, and I can't see any obvious signs of problems. Still need to check with multimeter though. Don't have access to one though.
The previous owner told me that it happened while driving back to Alice Springs from Adelaide. I assume that I can find the manual you are talking about under the workshop manuals section of this forum?

If everything else been check out, and theres no other visible fault. Also in rhe service manuals goes through a fault find chart.
When I first got my car it was stuck in third gear. Replace TCU solved my problem.

link did work.
Just read the service manual. I don't have a Multimeter or a MUT available to me. Is there any other way that I can read the fault codes from the connector?
