hey guys, another quick few questions.
I want to upgrade my exhaust system from stock on my 98 magna wagon, just wondering what the best set up to go is? in terms of piping size, mufflers and resonators etc?
Hi there. Generally people go for the full 2.5 inch system which seems to be the sweet spot on most cars these days but it all depends what sort of money you're willing to spend and why you're doing it?
Are you just after a nicer sound? After a few more horses? Or has your existing system failed completely?
Yours being a TF 3.0 litre would probably have an old rubbish system on it that is anywhere between 2 - 2.25 inches, lower on some of the bents. Even if you could get hold of a second hand system off a 3.5 TJ / VRX it would be a nice improvement and wouldn't cost you much, it would all bolt straight on.
I've seen quite a few of the stock systems on the 3 litres and they're all pretty bad. The 3.5 litre systems were so much better at the bends, more consistant piping sizes throughout the whole system.
Alternatively, if you just want the sound and a couple more horses you can get a direct belt on rear muffler from lukey if you feel like doing it yourself to save some money. The rear muffler are known to be very restrictive.

Thanks for such a detailed reply! much appreciated!
Well essentially i want a less restrictive system, theres absolutely nothing wrong with my current set up, just want a nicer sound and more power.
I am fairly tempted to say to a shop i want a 2 1/2 pipe made up and put the lukey muffler on. but unsure if its ultimately worth it? i don't mind spending around $400 but it would have to be worth while...

Possibly look for a second hand mid section from a late model wagon, coupled with a bolt on lukey rear muffler. Otherwise you would be looking at upwards of $800 to have one made up and put on.
The mid section should only set you back $30-40 from a wrecker and the lukeys go for $200 bolt on from memory. I'm not even 100% sure if the bolt on lukeys bolt up to the wagons. Someone please confirm or deny?

haha, don't worry i wasn't serious, is the lukey a straight through muffler or does it actually provide some sort of muffling? because i was going to do a straight pipe from the cat to the rear muffler if i could?
The lukey ones are a straight through design. So it will be pretty loud. You want at least one other muffler or two hot dog resi's in your system.
Here's Matt's car which only has a rear muffler, it's louuuud: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UfMqC0i4sQ

Haha.. what? :|
Glad you have a manual, it won't drone nearly as much if you get a loud exhaust. If you had a sedan, this would be something you could get: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MITSUBISHI-MAGNA-TR-TS-TE-TF-TH-TJ-TL-1992-2004-REDBACK-2-5-CATBACK-EXHAUST-/260936325624?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cc10459f8

i have a bad sense of humour it seems lol.
just rang an exhaust place, the guy reckons it's too hard to make a system and isnt worth it because it needs madrel bends, slight spanner in the works...

When I bought my car it used to have stock cat then just pipe back to small straight through mufflers. It passed for rego's and police never defected me but it was a little too loud and raspy for my liking.
I've added a straight through 2.5 inch resonator, and bigger straight through muffler on the back and it's much better now (still loud but not over the top).

Or is the 98 Magna an OBD2 (or whatever it is) CAT?
You're not going to notice any gains from replacing the cat unless your current one is blocked. As stated, get a rear muffler change and possibly the mid section replaced with one from a late model 3.5l wagon.

If you get a Hi-Flow cat then one rear muffler alone won't keep it quiet enough, you'd need to also add a decent resonator after the cat.
There is a good cheap exhaust guy a fellow AMC member put me onto near Liverpool. (PM me if you want his details)
I agree leave standard cat unless it's blocked.

I disagree about changing the cat.
My opinion based on the changes I have made to my AWD are.
Headers give a fair bit of more power because they get rid of the awkward Y joint where the front and rear bank downpipes are joined together.
I then fitted a custom made, mandrel bent 2.5" system, mainly because the rear muffler had carked it and I had the excuse to get it past the financial controller.
My local mechanic forgot that I also wanted to have the Cat changed as well so this job was done in 2 parts.
Made sure that there was a big hot dog behind the cat as well as a slightly better flowing rear muffler compared to the original sports muffler.
My opinion that this only gives a tad more power.
Then finally had the CAT changed to a 2.5" 200 cpi one.
This definitely makes a big difference even at low engine revs.
I had previously changed the cam timing to improve low end torque on the AWD.
Combined with the complete new exhaust this definitely gives much improved urban performance.
Outside the car just sound sporty, not really loud at all. Several people have commented to me about the nice exhaust note.
I am happy as well as it saves around 1 to 1.5 l/ 100 kms as well as having a car that is much nicer to drive in stop and go traffic.

I've got a Redback 2.5" catback with a 3A racing rear muffler. Sounds nice and deep, not too loud, minimal rasp.
Only problem I have with it is the Redback catback's centre muffler sits fairly low... It doesn't like speedhumps (although, my car is lower then most with ~60-70mm ground clearance).

Sorry, I should have expanded a little bit on my explaination.
On a stock 3 litre, without any other mods. The op is going to notice no difference by changing the cat alone. Changing the cat is a great supporting mod once you've done many other things already to increase performance.

Thought I'd dig up an old thread rather than start a new one.
Looking for advice on replacing middle section & muffler on my 3rd Gen wagon. Can anyone comment on the difference between the Sedan and Wagon mufflers? Being bolt-on as well figure I could save a few coins but Redback seems to be about the only one available at the moment: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121170583808

Seeing as there's action in this thread, is there a cat back that bolts straight on to the TLs, or will I have to shorten a red back the same as I did with my TJ?
EDIT: TL sedan.

Cheers Madmagna, I'd been digging through threads for ages but about 20 pages in came back with a few more results including one of yours: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85983&highlight=wagon
Tried repairing a hole in the mid section but job only lasted a couple of weeks so now's a good time to replace the whole thing.
Maybe there's less Magons around these days. Are there any other options apart from a complete custom system for the Wagons? I found a bloke selling a Sportswagon exhaust system online for $450, in SA though, seems ok.

I was wondering the same thing about the Redback system, although apparently it won't go on a Wagon at all :(
I do remember seeing a thread where a guy used a shorter Cat to get around modifying the Redback, I'll try and dig it up, but I could be wrong.

I've got the red back on my TJ, and I had to shorten it. Now the centre section of my TLs exhaust has rusted out, and I'm trying to find the best option to replace it.

I think mine sounds nice, Standard cat, first resonator, then all the rest removed and the rear muffler replaced with 2.5" xforce muffler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP1EVggpr74

Was just reading through this thread and the exhaust prices seem a bit steep to me, what are people paying for an aftermarket cat back exhaust? Mine cost $425 and it's a custom 2 1/2 with a res in the middle and splits into 2 mufflers at the rear with 4 dump pipes.. For a single pipe I was quoted about $325 from memory

$500 to my door for a redback, which I'll have to do soon since I can hear the farting start ... Bloody exhausts, hate the things, never had any luck with the flaking things.

I am glad this active. Just got my TF sedan back from log book service and theres a hole in my exhaust but I am planning on replacing it, what i can see for a 2 1/2 red back is the way to go? I' ve always been a keep it stock man since having s#!tboxes so I am new to this, I'll go do some research.

I walked into my local parts supplier and just asked for the middle and rear exhaust sections for my TJ. Ended up with a Redback centre section and a Walker rear muffler. Louder than stock, nice burble on it actually. Easy bolt on job, $179 for each bit, so $358 all up.
