Lookin at gettin a magna soon  and im wondering if someone could give me the low down on what to look for on them, what are the differences between the 2, and a few other things i.e milage, parts costs/availability etc.
Basically a mini summary of both cars pro's and con's. I have 8k to spend and ive seen some stock TFs for just over 8ono with reasonably low ks, alltho i could go a TE with say rims and tint for the same price.
So whats the go?

Find a manual..

If you look harder, you may even be able to find a TH Manual for 8k, must be private sale though i reckon, dealers won't do sub 8k for TH. anyway, I would suggest TH manual, with or without power windows, the 3.5L manual's go pretty hard, i'm guess a 0-100 in 8sec stock and you can work from there, and they have the extra torque on the 3.0L s.

I think on average as a general rule of thumb, a later model of the same generation is going to (hopefully) have improvements over it's predecessors. Go the later but be careful to really investigate why the later model might be cheaper than you expected (i.e ex-company car). Don't rush into a buy!

The TE and TF are pretty much identical. There's not much difference between the 2 at all. The TE has the better looking interior trim to my knowledge much the differences are pretty much negligable. Just look for the best TE/TF/TH you can find for the price. Cos there really isn't much difference between the 3 except some TH's have the 3.5L. Also I would be going for an ABS option over power windows anyday. If your power window system gets stuffed it will cost you $1000+ to fix in some cases as my dad found out on his Mazda Bravo so I would be pushing for a 1996 TE 3.0L Manual with ABS for around $6000 but would settle for $6500 - $7000.

If you are after an Auto then try and go the TH because it has the 32 bit computer in the tranny. Makes a huge difference. A lot more drivable. But if it is the TE or TF you are after, once again in auto, then go the TF because it has an updated tranny over the TE. It is still a 16 bit jobby like the TE but has updated components in it to get rid of the bugs the TE's had in their trannies.
I have a KE, KH and KJ and the biggest difference in the trannnies between the KE and the KH is that the KE tends to use the torque a lot more and you really have to sink the foot a lot more to get it to kick back which isnt really a bad thing in my opinion. The KH is so much more sensitive to gear changes. You hardly have to put your foot down at all and it has already kicked back a gear. Doesnt take much to get the KH to say kick back to 2nd gear at 100 while you pretty much have to mash your foot into the firewall in the KE to do the same. The KH with its 32 bit tranny is also a lot smoother in changes.
Personal choice really. I perfer driving the KE because it utalises the torque of the 3.5 where as the KH just wants to rev hard which is fine but its nice to be able to plod along sometimes.

Greetings All.
Id got for a TF. And that not just because ive got one. :D
The TE had some minor engine/driveline/gearbox problems, and these were ironed out in the TF. Also, hunt for a manual, with ABS & Airbags...like me!! lol
Another thing, I tend to prefer the 3.0L just because they are much more revvy and responsive. (Well, that what ive found)
Damn i love my magna,

....what are the actual specific differences and changes between a TE/TF magna??
Apart from internal cosmetic differences (ie. seat trim & CUPHOLDERS!!! :doubt: ) i've always wondered what the difference was.

Greetings All.
Well, concidering the TE was the 1st 3rd Gen, it did have some MINOR mechanical problems. They ironed this out for the TF. Also, they discontinued the 4 Cyl for the TF's (I believe)

TF got cupholders, and different hubcaps I think. Oh, and standard speed alert as well (I think).
Also, my TE has the boot release lever down next to the seat (with the fuel door release), and Tonba's is in the glove box. Is that a difference between the TE and TF or just the difference between my Executive and his Advance?
Oh, and let's not forget that the TF got Remote Boot Release.

The TFs also got the speed alert function, the TE's I have seen didn't have this. Other then the tranny and a few cosmetics nothing really changed :D .
Also tonba we seam to have identical cars, in colour, apperance and features as I too have a manual TF with ABS and airbag lol

i pulled out that plastic centre part (surrounding the gear stick) to replace the gear stick cover, and i realised that i could just buy the TF part with the cup holders off mitsubishi. I will get a price today, probably way too much and not worth it

Yep, the Magna cupholders (as everytone has stated) are the shizzle. I think there's a couple of designers down at Mitsu who REALLY like their Farmer's Union Iced Coffee cause I've never seen another cupholder that can hold a 600ml carton so well, if at all.
As for the TE, yeah the space in front of the gear stick is just this stupid open compartment thing which is only good to hold the mobile phone and maybe some coins (but there's coin holders, so what's the point? Meh, Damien wants cupholders  ). Having said that, the little space near the coin holders between the centre console and the gear stick will hold a 600mL buddy or a Farmer's Union 600mL carton, but it's in the way of the stick and can only hold one. :doubt: I mean, who drinks just one Farmer's Union Iced Coffee?

A New South Welsh Man drinking Farmers Union Iced Coffee? What with quality beverages around like Pauls and Gary? FUIC is the drink my man, you chose wisely, after drinking FUIC there is no other Iced Coffee! Being SA built of course the magna cup holders were designed for FUIC. The VY commy can only just hold a 600ml bottle.
More to the point, if you really want cup holders, find a wrecked TJ and grap that centre plasticy thing. It's a direct swap. I grabbed one for my TE Altera from the wreckers for $15. Was prolly a rip off, but I wanted cup holders bad! You can fit a drink and a mobile phone in them! :fruitcake

Magna Cupholders Rule but don't take em for granted, went out works commonhore with a mandatory iced coffee tried to put it in the WTF is that excuse for a cup holder  .
Rear cupholders are great my TH has em in rear drop down armrest :) not as big as the front ones.
I thought they dropped the 2.4 in the TH and offered the 3.5 as an option across the range, then the TJ in the second half of 2002 dropped the 3.0 and the 3.5 become standard fit

just to clarify a few things, the 2.4 was dropped in the TF's (i think) there are a few TF 3.5's (late model sports and verada's?) and the 3.0 was dropped from the TH altogether, with the 3.5 standard across the range.
and definately GO THE CUP-HOLDERS!! i work at holdens, and the amount of FUIC drank there is crazy, i'm sure all the tight-asses that bought commodores or even worse, leased them, are spewing you have to jam a 600ml bottle to even get it to coming close to fitting!!

A New South Welsh Man drinking Farmers Union Iced Coffee? What with quality beverages around like Pauls and Gary? FUIC is the drink my man, you chose wisely, after drinking FUIC there is no other Iced Coffee! And as I was born in Adelaide and lived there for 9 years until my folks decided to pack up and move over here, I too was raised on a healthy diet of Farmer's Union Iced Coffee - the way Iced Coffee should be!!!! New South Welshman? I don't think so - and while I'm at it, as far as I'm concerned Port Adelaide are the Magpies and they always will be for me. Gotta love the SANFL.
And when we moved here there was no FUIC, no Balfours, no Woody's lemonade, no Fritz (what kind of stupid name for meat is Devon anyway???) and no Arnott's Yo-Yo biscuits!!! WTF is up with that? Nowadays, however, I can get FUIC just about everywhere (thank God!!) and we were able to get Balfours for a while. But I'm more a fan of Villy's Pasties so when I'm in Adelaide seeing the rest of the family I always stock up.
PS. Will be in Adelaide (stocking up on Yo-Yo biscuits, lemonade and Pasties, oh and going to a wedding) in October. I will have my Magna with me...

Look me up when you're in town Damien, I'll take you for a Pie Floater and a FUIC. I bite my tongue you crow eater! I got stopped and searched at Adelaide airport when I tried to take 2x3L FUIC thirst tankers on the plane to Brizzy with me - special delivery for my brother. He nearly didn't survive his first year of his stay - now he too can get FUIC everywhere!
Damien
08-08-2004, 07:53 PM
Haha, Pie Floater - I would take you up on that offer just to be patriotic, except I don't like peas. Although you could tempt me with a Pastie or a Green Frog. And perhaps a Dippity Dog (that's a Pluto Pup for you New South Wales people) and maybe some Potato Fritters (Scallops), and then we could head to the beach in our Bathers (swimmers). I had to learn a whole new language when we moved, haha.
Also, even though I live in the Hunter Valley, I always take a Barossa Wine over a local one.
Anyone else remember that "SA Great" ad that had that song that went "They don't have Fritz in Sydney, never tried a Woody's lemonade, no honey ice-cream, and the Popeye never sails"? Ah, good childhood memories.
