View Full Version : Auto Climate Control Issues

Hey all,
A while back I installed the TL climate controls into my KH. I did all the wiring correct to connect the external cabin sensor into the new controls (afaik).
What I noticed today (33 degree day) is that if I had the auto on and set to 20 degrees, when I start the car, the fans will fire up full blast for about 3-4 minutes then drop down to almost a 1-speed fan setting.
I was also with Lugo, and his TL just kept the high fan speed for 30+ minutes on the same 20 degree setting.
The fact that it goes high speed at the start should mean its detecting some heat difference or have I missed something completely with my conversion?
Otherwise, what else could be causing my fans to drop speed so significantly on a low temp setting on a high temperature day?
(When it was blowing the air was pretty cold btw).
Thanks. Joe.

Mine does it also, when set to Auto. It is just changing the temp in the cabin as quickly as possible.
Fan fires up fast and slows down when it gets to temp.

Yeah, I expect that. But Lugo was around and his just kept pumping. It was 33 degrees today - I wouldn't expect it to stop after 4 minutes when the c/c is set to 20 degrees?
Faulty cabin sensor perhaps?
What role does the hose attached to the sensor play? Maybe its not on well, or fell off?

I've also done this conversion myself. I followed your instructions onkytonk to hook up the cabin sensor (Thanks heaps!!).
I've found this issue as well. My system will not turn the air-con on unless I set the temp to the lowest setting or push down the fan speed knob. It'll blow full blast unless I turn the air-con on. The fan's also turn onto full blast around 2-3 minutes after I turn the car on - I'd assume in that time the system heats up enough and then trys to heat up the car very quickly.
Otherwise I've been happy with how the system runs. To be honest I don't use it too much because I'm not someone that likes air from a machine lol - I'll only use the climate control when tts very cold or very hot. I find it can get quite stuffy in the car with this system.
If the interior cabin sensor was not working then I think you'll find that the temps would be all over the place. To test if it though - cup your hand around the sensor and see if the fan speed changes. I know when I put my hand over the sensor, about 30-60 seconds later the system bumped up the fan speed and then slowed down once I removed my cupped hand.

Today: 33 degrees
Today i plugged in my original KH c/c and when set on 20 degrees auto, it stayed on full fans for a full 35 minute trip.
Once i got to Lugo's place i put the TL c/c back in. After a few tests today with Lugo's TL we have come to a few conclusions. We swapped the cabin sensors and there was no difference. We compared the fan speed changes during 10 minute drives in the same conditions with the c/c on the same settings. Mine was still dropping fan speed to 2 speed. His stayed around 4 speed.
After inspecting the loom plugs we found there were quite a few different wires. So we referred to the circuit diagrams in the workshop manual. Without going into major detail, I disconnected two wires in plug B-12 and two in B-13. Don't know, but it seems the air con was now cooler. We assumed it had something to do with Eco feature in the older system. However, my fans are still dropping dramatically compared to the original KH C/c.
So I'm still a little stumped.
Anyone else done the conversion and had it running like normal? What did u do differently (if anything)?
Could my c/c controls be faulty?

There is a curious link in the TL to the High Contrast version Centre display and the Climate system.
I have no idea why. But it exists.
Maybe look into it.

Yes but that doesn't exist in a standard TL so shouldn't it still work without it?

Anyone else here done the TL C/c conversion that can offer me their feedback or advice?

To be honest - I haven't found this much of a problem. If the car isn't cold enough then I just turn the temp dial down lower or over-ride the auto function and ramp up the fans. I'm just not that fussed so I can't really provide you with too much more information. From what I gather - we're definetely a minority because not a lot of people have done it.
Maybe speak to the_ash - he's a auto lecky and knows a bit about these systems. He hasn't done a TL cc conversion but he still might be able to help. He's a top bloke!
