Hi everyone i have just bought myself a 96 te altera and im new to these forums :D. Now when i bought it the owner wasn't quite sure which engine it had in it.

The story was it had a another magna motor put it in because the last one seized. I just want to know how to identify which motor it is a 6g72 or a 6g74.

Your help would be much appreciated :D !

The engine number is stamped on the block at the front of the engine facing the radiator. Some of the 6g72s also had silver rocker covers but this isnt a dead cert as it may hve been changed to a black one

Not much difference, 3.0 is rev happy, 3.5 has more low down torque/power.

RE: "Shitting" itself. lol Depends on the age and condition of the motor, no difference between the two otherwise. If you want to be "nice" to the engine, change oil, filter(s), coolant, check spark plugs etc.

Wow there is another person who has a 96 te altera, It had better be burgandy. Welcome to the club mate. mine is a 6g74 and it pulls hard.

The original engine size can be decoded from the VIN - the number and letter immediately following the model code (TE in your case) are the "class" code which includes engine and trans. I can't immediately lay hands on the detailed info to suggest exactly what they might be.

While it is most likely that the original engine was a 6G72, if your car was optioned with the 6G74 then the 6G72 replacement will be down a bit on power compared to the factory 6G72 because of the more conservative ignition timing map in the 6G74 ECUs.
