View Full Version : Gap between rear passenger window and surround

Hey guys
I have a window which has a fairly large gap between itself and the surround. This causes some really strong wind noise which I find very annoying.
I took it to a smash repair today, and while he attempted to fix it, when he put the window back up it came right back out of place. He has suggested taking it to Mitsubishi but at $110 an hour + parts I was hoping for some advice before I would go down that route

Mine has the same problem. Where in NSW are you. I know a couple of good panelbeaters
panel beater?
The rubber seal around the frameless doors needs replacing. the rubber dries out and contracts

I'm in Campbelltown.
But yeah, the rubber seal does appear to have contracted a large amount.
Do you know where I would take the car to have that replaced? Mitsubishi?

You are on the wrong track there. The glass has two large plastic fingers on the bottom edge in the door which pull the glass to the ruber seal when it is almost up. Pull the door skin off and you may see they are both broken. Replace from wreckers. How do I know? My TJ had the same problem, passenger side rear door. Check the manual for the correct alignment procedure.

Did you find the window would be somewhat wiggly when the door was opened?
I would love to open the door trim but its raining a bit at the moment and I don't have any undercover area to pop the trim off in

Opened the door trim and there are 2 white plastic fingers at the bottom as you said, one of them on the right (the wiggly side) is broken.
Could you confirm this is what you are talking about? I got a picture of the broken one and the part that broke off it. (as well as the normal one)

Yes, that's exactly what I found in the door of mine! Seems it happens a lot, but only to the rear passenger door. Weird.

My local wrecker didn't deal with that type of thing, but I bought one (or atlest I hope it was) at Mitsubishi.
It was called a hook - window stabiliser, but apparently theres two sides to them which I didn't notice when I took the door apart :-/ Part was only $8.75 and the diagram he showed me looked the closest to it of any of them so I figure it was the right part.
What is this manual I'm meant to use? Also, should I have the window partially up when I put it in? When it was all the way down a bar covered it perfectly so it would be really difficult to take it out.

I haven't fitted it yet but it is
M*mb926277, there is actually 2 separate ones but I think they are the same part.
Also, I have the manual, but what am I meant to be looking for exactly?

click on link. Its a russian parts catalogue but the pics are the same as aussie cars.
Top left hand corner, item number 68015. looks like it screws to the glass

looks like it screws to the glass
Sure does. A hole in the glass, with a round plastic washer and a flat threaded plate. You need to worm your hand behind the glass to keep it in place while you thread the 10 mm bolt through the hook, the glass and screw it into the washer. Do-able but not easy for fat fingers. Make sure the washer etc are clean so the glass doesn't break. Loose fit to start.
Wind the window up so the finger engages the metal loop, then align the two and tighten.

It does screw to the glass definitely, I have the part with me but I have work for the next 3 days and an exam after that so I don't have huge opportunity to fit it, maybe Wednesday afternoon/evening.
Luckily I have relatively slender fingers so I should be alright.
Hoping I don't do anything silly, this has been an issue that annoyed since about when we got the car, never realised it was such a cheap part that would need replacing.

unreal, now i know too, my passenger rear has pissed me off since i got the car

Yeah we noticed it when we got the car late 2008 but I thought the problem would be more expensive so never looked into it.
I still haven't looked at repairing it because its been raining non-stop and I don't have a covered area to work on the car, might try on Sunday, weather permitting.
EDIT: Don't know if the guy actually knew what he was talking about but he said it was common to break when window tinting was being done. Still strange that it only effects 1 window.

Fitted the part today, all up took me half an hour, will take more handy people less time, was very easy to fix and the window definitely fits much better now.
Not hearing any massively obvious wind noise from that window but there is wind noise from soemwhere, but thats to be expected from this car I believe.

The wind noise is likely a mirror. They tend to squeal when you drive at higher speeds

I was driving my Ralliart today and wind noise started instantly from rear driver's window seal. Same problem. The "finger" on mine broke whilst I was driving it, however it is still partially attached so have glued it "in-situ". Will see if it holds otherwise replacement. It is only a tiny gap but enough to make a terrible noise. Frameless windows are a pain but look pretty nice. The windows from Mitsu Australia were never one of their strong points. Mind you, our 380 is yet to bust a regulator. One year of warranty left..........

I glued this with JB WELD. Held for half an hour (like most glues on plastic never really works). Looks like pulling the window out and replacing the part

No need to take the window out, just take the inner door trim off and you can get to it.

I ordered 2 of these today, something like $8.15 each. One spare I thought is a good idea. Something like 60 left at their Sydney warehouse. The bloke at the spare parts place said he has never sold one before. Obviously people just put up with the noise or think the Magna is naturally noisy from the factory!

60 kinda worries me, considering the number of Magna's out there, and how prevalent the issue seems to be :-/
I suppose wreckers can get them too, though mine only seem to deal with more significant panels rather then little bits and pieces.

There could be a lot more in Adelaide for example and you would think it is likely to be available overseas given the design was Japanese and they were exported to the USA. I think we should be right.

At 8 to each wreck at the u-pull-it car parks, we should be ok. lol Just look for ones with the door skin off, which seems to be most of them. lol

I replaced mine with a new part today. Easy job. At $8.15 I would just buy new. Second hand ones are going to have various degrees of plastic fatigue. Mind you they are simple to replace so if it lasts 2 years, replacement is easy. However, I think if I was on a long trip and one broke, the noise would drive me crazy. I wonder how easy it would be to get a cast aluminium version made? You could possible made a mould out of an intact part and cast them at home. Would be a fun exercise? The part would not have to be perfect as long as you finished the glass side off well.
