View Full Version : What is fault code 71 please? (TJ/KJ engine warning light.) Car at auto-electricians

I've retrieved code 71 from my engine warning light, but my Ellery manual doesn't list this code & the auto electrician hasn't got anything on it either. I'd like to find out what it means before I pick up the car tomorrow morning (Wednesday).

A few days ago, my car stopped immediately after starting, almost started on the 2nd attempt & after that would only turn over. It repeated that pattern later in the day.
Called the RACV & the fellow diagnosed a fuel filter or pump problem, so I checked these & they were ok.
I recalled that the car had behaved the same when a locksmith was testing a new key which hadn't been programed, so I searched this forum for immobiliser problems.
The following day I checked various connections & wriggled wires, after which it started normally.
The codes I retrieved were 44 (ignition coil & power transister system) & the mystery code 71.
Code 54 (immobiliser) didn't show.

I've also had the intermittent problem of the TCL-off light coming on, followed by the engine warning light. This has produced codes 61 plus, again, 71.

The auto-electrician hasn't found any problems, so I was hoping for a clue in the code 71.
He said he's seen the crank-angle sensor cause the non-start problem in Magnas when the motor was hot (mine was cold).

I recall dropping the key on the concrete floor before trying to start the car - any way that could have been responsible? I did try the other key.

I would suggest taht this car be plugged into a proper MUTTII system and a proper code read out be done on all systems, then can get a better idea of what may be happening as there is no code 71 for the motor, 71 is for the TCL and ECU communication system which would explain the TCL light but would not stop the car from starting

Unfortunately I had cleared the codes before deciding to take the car to the auto-electrician. He did say that his equipment might have retrieved a different code than 71.

Dropping the key on cement wouldn't cause your car to not start. You can rule that out. Sorry I can't be any more help than that. Have you tried cranking it over manually?

has it got spark? if not then i would be looking at the coil (distributor) and then the ecu. making sure that the heater core hasnt leaked onto it, perhaps its a dud ecu. but definitley start at the coil pack.
thats if the mechanic has ruled out the cas being the problem. (from memory, they have there own fault code anyway.)

To clarify - the car started the morning after it failed to start. Whether my fiddling with the wires helped I don't know.
It drove normally to the auto-electricians & he wasn't able to reproduce the problem.
However, without finding & fixing the problem I'm worried that it will reoccur (hence the visit to the electrician).

It seems likely that the 71 code was retained from the earlier problem with the TCL-off light (but shouldn't have been produced by the engine warning light).

Update - I've picked up the car. The electrician said he did a full scan and also checked live data, as well as checking wiring, but found no faults.

I know the query about dropping the key sounds odd, but in searching this forum I found a report of similar problems after a member had thrown his keys on the ground.

Was the problem fixed? I'm having the same issues

I would still look at the original immobiliser ring..

Not hard to check and a simple fix if its the issue..

The problem only occurred on that one day 14 months ago.
Whether I "fixed" the problem by wriggling the wires I can't say.

In case you havn't already seen this article, I suggest you search for the last post by (username) chobe75, then click on the link.

My "TCL-off" problem reappeared (after 15+ months) one day a few weeks ago.
I ran the electrical connection at the solenoids in & out a few times.
The warning light hasn't come on since, but again I'm not sure whether its because I fixed a poor connection.
