Hi all, still having air con issues.

96 magna wgn 4cyl has just destroyed its 3rd air con belt in 3mths. The last one had been on for over 2000km but every time would squeal, like it was loose, once the a/c had been on for 2-3mins. Day/night, hot or hotter it always would eventually squeal. Thinking new belts stretch a little i was going to tighten it, but it snapped before i got the chance.

Had last used a Gates 13A0950 belt and just fitted a 13A0955 belt. Problem is I can get it tight enough. As there is 15-20mm travel in it. (tho the belt is 5mm longer, thats not the issue). I just cant tighten it.

I dont think the tensioner threaded bolt is doing anything.

What is the correct process to fit and tighten the belt???

I loosen the nut on the pulley. It slides down and I can easily slip the new belt on. No worries.
I pull the pulley up to tighten the belt and retighten the nut. I think (big think) the pulley is at the top of it travel. The belt is on, but has way too much give in it.
I tighten the tensioner bolt anti-clockwise (ie to pull the bolt up, and one would assume the pulley) but the pulley wheel doesn't move a bit. The bolt just turns and starts coming out to it maximum.
((hard to picture i guess))

Am i doing it wrong, or is the tensioner assembly perhaps missing something, why is the pulley not moving with the bolt???

any help to fix much appreciated.
cheers

Those belts should be good for at least 110,000 km. I replaced one at that on a TJ V6 and only because it was cracking across the running surface of he belt.
Have you checked:
You are using the right belt?
The idler or aircon bearings haven't seized?
The idler is running true and the adjuster isn't stripped?

Time to have a really good look at it I think. Those belts don't just snap unless there is something really wrong.

You may have the wrong belt if the pully is fully up
and the belt is too slack
the TN-TP magnas use the same belt

with the lock nut up the tensioner pully must spin '
its a sealed bearing with spacers

the air con on the 4 cyl
has a locking nut that is 14 mm

see pic ( bolt holding pully)

that bolt holds the pully adjustment thread
you first undo that locking bolt
then adjust the tension by that long thread
then tighten the lock nut

belt should have flex a thumbs worth

also check the harmonic balancer is not oil soaked
and running straight ... use a straight edge across the pullys

I forgot the second gen ran a "V" belt rather than the 4 rib belt of the 3rd gen. Still shouldn't snap though.

cheers for the replies.

the pic is definitely the same part im dealing with.

As for the instuctions, thats what I'm doing, but the the long thread (turned either way) isn't doing anything.

Tho I have a Bosch 13A0955 this time, I did have the Gates 13A0950 as per the gates website.

... and so it continues
