View Full Version : Wind noise - front doors / A pillars

Hi, my Magna (TL) seems to get quite a lot of wind noise coming through around the front doors & A pillars. Wondering if this is an issue with this particular model or not? Have read an older thread re this - others suggesting door seals and the like. Recently upgraded the front to the older 'double' inner door seals, which fit OK - and this hasn't rectified the issue (or made any worse, for that matter).
What options should I be looking at to sort this out?
Thanks in advance.

Go slower or turn the sounds up both work equally well for me ;)
Are you sure it is not coming from the mirror. That is know to make whistling noises as well. Do a search on here for threads on it.

No, pretty sure that isn't it... thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, I've read about the front mirrors. Not really a whistling noise, just wind noise.

i have the same problem on my TL on the drivers side where the mirror is, i can only hear it when im doing 70kms and up, its giving me the SHITS only had the car a fiew months and it was like it when i got it. i have tried adjusting the window to get a tighter seal maybe helped a bit but not much. my drivers side window is not original so was consideing trying to get a original one to see if it helps but now after reading your thread dont think its that. Ive tried sticking my finger everywhere at speed to see if it stops or quietens it so i can locate the issue but makes no difference.(hard to mess with door at 100kms lol) will let you know if i locate it, please do the same for me if you find it.

You could spray foam that hardens into the A-pillars to reduce wind noise (just do a Google search). I did something a little different recently as my Magna had wind noise issues around the A-pillar, and the C-pillar where the rear window meets the plastic trim/rubber seal. I bought a roll of sticky backed aluminium flashing (it's like Dynamat) from Bunnings and stuck down two layers behind the A and C pillar trims. I initially tried one layer but then realised that two layers would still allow the trim to fix into place. With the trims fixed into place (just make holes through the flashing with a screw driver so that the trims can clip in) you cannot tell it's there. Just ensure that you don't put any flashing where the rubber seals fix to the car, only put it behind the trims. Wind noise has definitely reduced and is barely noticeable at freeway speeds where I spend most of my driving time. The only problem is that my hearing is now focused on wind noise at the B-pillar so I will be doing that shortly. Might have to inject foam into though as the trim fits quite snug around that pillar. See my ride thread for photos if you like.

Thanks for yr reply, interesting that I'm not the only one with a TL having issues with this. I'll let you know if I have any success in fixing this - there's a couple of things I'm going to try over the next few weeks.

I did a test on my TJ, i ran duct tape around the window and doors completely sealed it went for a drive, made no difference. Has to be the mirrors.
I hope someone has a fix

I think it is the driver's side mirror. Mine does it with the window down, but if I put my hand on the mirror seam - where the bit fixed to the door meets the bit that can swivel - the sound stops. Try some foam strip jammed in there. Might possibly fix it, no guarantees though.

Run some elec tape across the join with the mirror surround and cover cap and go for a drive, if no whistling then it is your mirror. Check the seal and for any slight raise in the surround and mirror body.
I had the same problem, till I fitted JDM folding mirrors and it went away.

i didnt think it was the mirror becouse you could hear it clearly inside with window up, but i cant find it so you must be right, maybe it finds its way through mirror brcketry into cabin. will try using tape maybe bluetack to confirm. thanks for input

I had the whistling noise in my KH, I always thought it was the drivers window but found out it was the mirror, I just put some slicon on the seam of the mirror that faces the driver as that seems to be where the whistle is coming from and it stopped it, hope this helps

Don't put tape on the seam and then leave it there for any length of time, the Sun just bakes it on and it's a pain to remove - especially masking tape. lol
You could wrap the whole mirror in a clear plastic bag and seal the opening with tape, then go for a drive. If it cuts the noise, look where the plastic flaps in the breeze the most- that will be the source of the noise. Silicon or foam strip seems a good idea as a permanent fix.

Been there, done that, sealed the mirror exterior garnish. Noise gone.
In my case the exterior garnish had split, bought a new one. Cleaned everything very carefully and made sure that the external triangle was properly seated.

Further thoughts on this one...I've noticed that the black triangular piece on the outside of the front driver's side window is slightly cracked on my TL and sticks out a tiny bit from the window on the edge. Randomly found this old thread comment:
Craig O01-01-2007, 12:23 PM
It is more than likely the triangular piece, (not sure what its called), but the front run channel on the corner of the door. I recall there had been a lot of complaints about wind noise and it turned out to be this part. At the factory there was a jig made up that the QA guys had, and when the parts came in from Japan they where put in this jig and bent in a couple of millimeters. This was used from TJ onwards hence why some owners of earlier 3rd gens complain of wind noise around the A pillar.
I'm guessing this is the same bit that's looking worse for wear on my car. I think I'm going to get this replaced with a new item if possible from the dealership & see where that takes me.

I took the mirrors off and taped up the holes in the doors went for a drive no difference, i give up.
What i don't understand my mate has a TE and doesn't make any wind noise and done 345,000 kms a complete shitter, I've checked both cars side by side looked at door seal's triangles window seals mirrors and cannot see any differences between them, maybe the door frame is out.
I have to put up with it for now, and I'll put it down as poor build quality.

Bit of a bump but I recently dealt with this and remembered once reading this thread.
I just recently had an audio install done and the new tweeters were obviously not compatible with the existing mount and were glued into the tweeter pod. This meant nothing was securing the black triangular pieces on the outside (As the factory tweeter mount bolts into those, holding them onto the car, which I guess the installer didn't notice) - a fact I discovered when one of them dislodged at 80km/h and I had to reach out of the car and pull it off to avoid it flying away. Accompanying said dislodgement was a massive increase in wind noise.
I've since Dynamatted under the black triangular covers, adhered them back on, and there is now less road noise. My '02 Series II KJ had wind whistle at 100+km/h, I believe the Dynamat has solved this issue so for anyone else with this issue, you may like to try a little bit of sound deadening under the plastic or under the tweeter, and rescrew them together.

Interesting, thanks Jakeys... I replaced my driver's side plastic triangle (outside one) with a better one, which has not made any difference. I have mine screwed in properly as I'm currently using factory tweeter mounts. So, the triangle pieces that clip on & then screw in - you've glued them on instead, with dynamat underneath?

Yes, after the install they didn't give me the brackets/screws that used to be there, presumably because they assumed I would have no need for them since the old tweeters aren't in use any more. So they were just clipped on (and the clip is very weak, I would not trust it) and started to come off and the wind noise got extremely bad. As soon as I got home I dynamatted that entire triangular section and then just got some adhesive and adhered those black panels on top of the dynamat. As far as I can tell, it's eliminated the wind noise. I know for sure it's gone at 80, I believe it's gone at 100+ as well but I only tested once very briefly. I don't normally go anywhere you can do that speed. At the moment the adhesive is just extra gluey stuff from the Dynamat around the edge but once I've made sure it all works okay I will be properly gluing those panels on.
If you were to do this you'd want to do the same thing, but just make sure you have a hole for your screws to go through, as it would be even more effective if you also then screw the panel in over the triangular piece. The triangle isn't flush, it's got a bit of depth to it so there is room for the dynamat and the panel to sit flush like it was. There was just empty space there before.
